Job Description

Job Title Veterinary Surgeon - Fixed Term Contract

Salary Up to £65,000 per annum (D.O.E.)

Location Blacks Veterinary Practice, Dudley, West-Midlands

Job Type Fixed Term Contract -12 months

Hours Full and part time applicant’s welcome

Due to maternity leave, we’re looking for a Veterinary Surgeon to join the team at Blacks Vets in Dudley on a 12-month fixed-term contract.

Passionate about medicine? Hold a certificate — or have a keen interest? This could be the perfect role for you.

You’ll cover hospital shifts at our Dudley hospital, managing a varied inpatient caseload and delivering high-quality, hands-on care every day.

Ready to make an impact? We’d love to hear from you.

Why join us?

  • We are a small animal, first-opinion hospital providing true 24-hour care, supported by a highly experienced team of 19 vets — including 7 Certificate Holders in cardiology, dermatology, medicine, ophthalmology, and soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery, alongside colleagues currently studying towards further certificates.
  • Our practices are equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic facilities, including CT, a fully equipped dental suite (with dental training available), 12 operating theatres, digital X-ray, ultrasound, endoscopy, and a comprehensive in-house laboratory — giving you everything you need to deliver exceptional clinical care.
  • Our size, strong insured client base, and varied caseload allow us to support a wide range of clinical interests and professional development ambitions, whether you are looking to deepen existing expertise or pursue further qualifications.
  • We are committed to continually raising the bar in patient care — investing in the calibre and ongoing development of our Vets and Nurses, while maintaining the friendliness, professionalism, and compassion of our Client Care teams.
  • As part of the wider Linnaeus network, we work closely with referral centres and specialists, offering collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and additional clinical support across the group.

The Team

Here at Blacks Vets, we have a proven track record of producing talent in a variety of disciplines from graduates to certificate holders, to branch management, leadership, and director roles. As a progressive, growing and highly successful practice, we are always on the lookout for outstanding team members to join our award-winning friendly team, at our accredited Veterinary Hospital in Dudley and our surrounding local branches (on the edge of the West Midlands, but all within 30 mins of Birmingham City Centre).

Not only do we have great clinical facilities, but we also have a spacious break room - including posh coffees!

We have a dedicated night team on site that covers all OOH work. Our last appointment is at 6.30pm during weekdays, and weekend work is shared fairly amongst the team on a rota basis - with time back in lieu the following week.

What we are looking for

  • Ideally, you will be confident across all first opinion work including surgery and medicine
  • RCVS registered with extensive first opinion experience
  • Enjoys being part of a team and values high standards of care in all areas

What we offer

  • 5-weeks holiday plus bank holidays and birthday leave
  • Relocation support
  • RCVS and VDS fees paid
  • Employer contribution pension scheme
  • Life assurance
  • E-car salary sacrifice scheme
  • Enhanced equal family leave
  • Extensive internal and funded external CPD
