Job Description

Veterinary Surgeon (2–4 Years’ Experience) Owner-Led Practice, Portsmouth

Portsmouth Vets for Pets is an independently owned, veterinary-led practice within the Vets for Pets Group. The practice has been owned and run by experienced GP veterinary surgeon Justyn Loveridge since 2012, proudly serving its local community with clinical standards and working culture determined in-house

This role is designed for someone with 2-4 years’ experience who wants to practise good medicine, develop strong clinical judgement, and work in an environment that values thoughtful decision-making rather than simple throughput.

“I want this to be a place where vets become confident clinicians, feel comfortable discussing cases, have support when they need it, the freedom to develop their own judgement, and enjoy coming to work.” Justyn Loveridge, Practice Owner

What makes this role different?

- 15-minute consultations as standard
- An open-door culture for case discussion and clinical support
- Continuity of care so you can follow cases through
- Genuine clinical autonomy with support when needed
- No out-of-hours commitments
- No expectation to take on management responsibilities unless you want to

You will be supported to develop confidence and judgement in practice. The aim is not to micromanage decisions, but to help you grow into a calm, capable clinician who enjoys managing cases and building relationships with clients.

Support and development

We place a strong emphasis on mentoring and professional development.

Previous vets from the practice have progressed to senior clinical roles and specialist training. We encourage discussion of cases, shared learning, and reflection on clinical decisions. The goal is structured independence: support when you need it, and the space to develop your own clinical style.

About the Practice

Portsmouth Vets for Pets is a busy first-opinion small animal practice with a stable and supportive team. We aim to create an environment where vets enjoy their work, feel comfortable discussing cases, and have the time needed to practise good medicine.

We believe in clear communication with clients and a pragmatic, transparent approach to treatment planning.

About Portsmouth

Portsmouth is a vibrant coastal city with excellent access to the South Downs National Park and the wider Hampshire countryside. It offers a lively independent food and cultural scene, good transport links to London, and a lower cost of living than many surrounding areas in the South-East.

The Role

We are seeking a veterinary surgeon with:

  • Around 2–4 years’ experience in small animal practice
  • A desire to develop clinical confidence and judgement
  • An interest in general practice and wanting to develop both surgical and medical skills
  • Good communication skills with clients and colleagues
  • An interest in managing cases and building long-term client relationships

This role would suit someone who wants to continue developing as a clinician within a supportive and thoughtful practice environment.

Salary and benefits

  • Competitive salary depending on experience. £40K-£55K
  • Generous CPD allowance with encouragement for further development
  • RCVS and VDS fees paid
  • Flexible working considered
  • Standard Vets for Pets benefits package including a colleague rewards hub
