Job Description

Animal Referral Hospital (ARH) Canberra is seeking an Internal Medicine Specialist to join a genuinely high-performing multidisciplinary hospital where clinical excellence, team culture, and professional respect sit at the centre of everything we do.

This is an opportunity to work alongside some of the most accomplished clinicians in the region, in a hospital that is both technically exceptional and deeply human in how it operates.

A team that genuinely works together

ARH Canberra is a place where collaboration is not just encouraged, it’s how care is delivered.

The team has a strong sense of shared purpose, a great sense of humour, and a calm, professional approach even in the most complex cases. Specialists, ECC vets, and brilliant nurses work seamlessly together, stepping in for one another without ego, and supporting each other to achieve the best possible outcomes.

It’s a hospital where people speak highly of each other, where support is real, and where you’ll feel part of something cohesive from day one.

Clinical excellence at an international level

The internal medicine team is exceptionally well regarded, led by a Head of Medicine who is board-certified across Australia, the USA, and Europe. You’ll also be working alongside the only Australian internal medicine specialist to have achieved European board certification this year, placing this team among the most highly credentialed in the region.

Across the wider referral network, you’ll collaborate closely with specialists in surgery, critical care, oncology, rehabilitation and diagnostic imaging, all committed to delivering thoughtful, evidence-based care.

The caseload is varied, complex, and rewarding, with strong referral relationships and excellent case continuity supported by a highly integrated ECC service.

A hospital designed for how you actually work

ARH Canberra operates from a large, purpose-built specialist and emergency hospital, recently renovated and designed around clinical workflow and patient care.

This is a busy, thriving hospital with a genuine sense of energy, but one that remains structured, well-supported, and highly functional.

Facilities include:

  • CT and high-field MRI

  • Advanced ultrasound, endoscopy and digital radiology

  • Fully equipped in-house laboratory

  • Three dedicated surgical suites and multiple consult rooms

  • A dedicated rehabilitation facility adjacent to the hospital, including hydrotherapy and a pressure-sensitive walkway system sourced from Germany

Purpose-built spaces to optimise patient care and client support

The environment enables you to practice at a high level, with the tools and support you need to do your job well.

The role

This is a primarily clinical Internal Medicine position, ideally full time (4-day or 5-day week), with flexibility for part-time candidates.

You will work closely with the existing medicine team and broader specialists, contributing to case management, mentorship, and the ongoing development of the service.

What you can expect

  • A highly collaborative, respectful specialist environment

  • Access to a large and diverse referral caseload

  • Strong nursing support and integrated ECC service

  • Purpose-built hospital with advanced equipment and infrastructure

  • A team culture that is supportive, professional, and genuinely enjoyable

Alongside this, ARH offers a competitive salary package, continuing education support, parental leave, and relocation and visa assistance for international candidates.

Life in Canberra

Canberra offers a quality of life that is increasingly hard to replicate in larger cities. With short commutes, access to nature, and a strong sense of community, it provides space to focus on both your career and life outside of work.

From national parks and lake-side living to a growing food and wine scene, it’s a lifestyle that supports balance without compromise.

What we’re looking for

  • Board-certified Internal Medicine Specialist (FANZCVS, DACVIM or DECVIM), or

Residency-trained veterinarian preparing to sit exams

  • You’ll bring strong clinical judgement, a collaborative approach, and a genuine interest in contributing to a high-functioning, supportive team.

Ready to learn more?

If you’re looking for a hospital where clinical standards are high, the team genuinely works together, and the environment allows you to do your best work — we’d love to speak with you.
