We are seeking an enthusiastic and hard-working team player to join our collaborative and supportive Small Animal Internal Medicine Team. Our hands-on 12-month small animal internal medicine internship offers the opportunity to immerse yourself in the intricate and diverse world of canine and feline medicine, featuring primary case responsibility, strong patient care focus, formalised didactic training, and exposure to other specialty disciplines. The position is well suited to a variety of purposes, whether that be a candidate looking to build a strong medicine foundation for future work in general practice or a candidate aiming to pursue a residency/specialisation pathway.
About Us
VRH is a multi-disciplinary speciality referral hospital and 24/7 emergency centre in Melbourne’s south-east. We pride ourselves on being a patient-focused practice and delivering treatment that has the best interest of the patient and client in mind. We also believe in a team approach to patient care, recognising that optimum patient care centres of collaboration between our specialty departments.
Our medicine department consists of five specialists, all board-certified, with decades of experience including training and knowledge from around the world. We are supported by a team of experienced and skilled nurses. We all relish the opportunity to mentor the next generation of medicine-focused clinicians.
Our hospital is a purpose-built, state-of-the-art facility. We work closely with our other specialty departments including surgery, neurology, diagnostic imaging, anaesthesia, and emergency and critical care (with oncology joining late 2026). We have access to a full suite of endoscopy equipment with dedicated procedure space and capability for performing interventional procedures. Our advanced imaging needs are supported by qualified radiographers with access to fluoroscopy, 16-slice CT, and 1.5T MRI. Patient care is enhanced by our 24-hour intensive care unit.
The Opportunity
This is a full-time, 12-month internship within the Small Animal Internal Medicine Department (Monday to Friday). You will be working four days per week with no weekends or on call commitments. As an intern, you will:

The design of the program allows for increasing responsibility over the year while maintaining close specialist supervision with constant mentorship.
