Job Description

The Medicine team at the Centre for Animal Referral and Emergency (CARE) are looking for their next superstar intern!

You will join our team of four specialists, Drs Linda Abraham, Karen Brenner, Laura Lim and Sophie Haynes, along with their dedicated and highly skilled medicine nurses, who are all committed to delivering optimum care and outcomes for every single one of our medicine patients and clients.

CARE is a multidisciplinary hospital on the edge of the CBD in the cosmopolitan suburb of Collingwood. There are three main departments, Medicine, Surgery and Emergency and Critical Care and we like to work as a large collaborative team to get the job done. Our ECC department is open 24/7 which means we have excellent round-the-clock care for our medicine patients.

About the Small Animal Medicine Internship

As the medicine intern, your responsibilities and experience would include:

  • Working together with the medicine specialists to manage an interesting, complex and varied caseload from the consult to discharge and beyond, providing you with an in-depth on-the-job learning opportunity.
  • Compilation and summarising previous histories.
  • Patient care of hospitalised patients.
  • Assistance with anaesthesia and procedures.
  • Written and verbal communication with clients and referring veterinarians.
  • Mentoring and regular tutorials to help build on your medicine knowledge and help (if relevant) to prepare for ANZCVS membership examinations.
  • Involvement in a multi-specialist medicine journal club and opportunities to network.

About You

Candidates must have a recognised Veterinary degree in Australia and be eligible for veterinary registration in Victoria, have excellent communication skills and a strong knowledge base on which to build. Applicants must also be eligible to work in Australia.

Life at CARE

The successful candidate will enjoy:

  • Membership of a friendly, supportive, and highly productive team of veterinarians and nurses within the Internal Medicine department, and more broadly, within CARE.
  • Immersion in a workplace culture that encourages, values, and makes provision for continuing professional development, with a strong emphasis on the educational and professional value of the internship program.
  • Relocation assistance and the potential for Visa sponsorship for international candidates (must have veterinary degree that is recognized for registration in Victoria).
  • A workplace that is focused on employee wellbeing, professional satisfaction, and the sustainability of veterinary work.
  • Access to our Employee Assistance Program
  • An easy commute to work, owing to our close proximity to multimodal public transport and major arterial freeways. Secure off-street staff car parking is available.
  • Great staff amenities – a commercial-grade coffee machine, Allpress beans, snacks and beverages galore!
  • Centrally located workplace in one of Melbourne's most exciting lifestyle precincts, surrounded by a number of excellent cafes, restaurants and breweries.

The internship is a full-time fixed term position for 12 months. Commencement date is flexible. Candidates with some general practice experience are preferred but exceptional new graduates will also be considered. Whilst it is not a pre-requisite, this position would suit someone considering developing their interest to the extent of specialist training in the discipline, or related disciplines, in the future.
