At Shady Brook Animal Hospital, our externship program is designed to give veterinary students a well-rounded clinical experience in a welcoming, high-quality practice environment.
As part of the National Veterinary Associates (NVA) network, we are committed to fostering a positive learning experience rooted in mentorship, teamwork, and excellent patient care. You’ll gain invaluable insight into the daily operations of a successful veterinary hospital, all while sharpening your clinical and communication skills.
What You’ll Experience:
One-on-one mentorship from seasoned Associate Veterinarians
Hands-on experience performing physical exams and gathering patient histories
Diagnostic workups, treatment plan creation, and case discussions
Exposure to dentistry services and the opportunity to assist in surgical procedures
Client communication training and team collaboration opportunities
Program Highlights:
📅 Duration: minimum 2 weeks, up to 4 weeks (flexible based on student and hospital schedules)
🎓 Eligibility: veterinary students
💸 Stipend: $1,000 for students in their clinical years to assist with travel/living expenses
