Job Description

About Us

At the Animal Referral Hospital, we are passionate about providing exceptional care to our patients when they need it most. We specialise in emergency and critical care, ensuring every patient receives expert medical attention in a supportive and collaborative environment.

Our Emergency and Critical Care team is one of the most experienced in the country, with 12 membership-qualified ECC veterinarians and an ECC Specialist providing clinical leadership and mentorship. This depth of expertise provides an outstanding learning environment for interns, with access to experienced clinicians, mentoring, and a diverse range of complex emergency and critical care cases.

The Position

As an Intern in our Emergency and Critical Care Department, you'll be at the heart of the action, working side by side with our highly skilled ECC team. You'll have the opportunity to provide life-saving treatments, assist in emergency surgeries, and manage critical cases that require quick thinking and sound clinical judgement. With a diverse caseload and a fast-paced environment, no two days will be the same.

This position is a 12-month fixed-term contract commencing in early 2027.

What We Offer

  • Hands-on Experience: Gain invaluable experience in emergency medicine and critical care under the guidance of our experienced ECC team. You'll actively participate in the management of complex cases, developing your clinical skills and confidence.
  • Exceptional Mentorship: Learn from one of Australia's most experienced ECC teams, including 12 membership-qualified ECC veterinarians and an ECC Specialist who alternates weeks on site. You'll receive regular support, feedback and mentoring throughout your internship.
  • Modern Facilities and Equipment: Work with advanced diagnostic equipment, imaging, and patient monitoring systems, giving you the tools to provide a high standard of emergency and critical care.
  • Professional Development: Take advantage of our comprehensive internal continuing education program, including regular seminars, workshops and case discussions. We're committed to supporting your professional growth and developing your areas of interest.
  • Work-Life Balance: Although emergency medicine can be unpredictable, we value maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Our flexible scheduling helps ensure you have time to rest and recharge.

About You

  • You must be a Registered Veterinarian or hold a Veterinary Degree recognised in Australia.
  • General Practice or Emergency experience is preferred but not essential.
  • Recent veterinary graduates with a strong interest in Emergency and Critical Care are encouraged to apply.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential.

Additional Benefits

  • Ability to choose access to external resources such as VIN, Plumb's, Vetstream and Elsevier.
  • Access to GP and AEC webinars through Vet Education, with an extensive archive of on-demand webinars and new webinars added monthly.
  • RECOVER CPR certification, providing an internationally recognised life-support certification to help our specialist and emergency teams apply consistent, evidence-based techniques.
  • Option to choose paid AVA membership or State Veterinary Board registration.
  • Additional benefits including paid parental leave, car leasing programs, Fitness Passport and discounted health and pet insurance.
  • Opportunity to participate in charity events supported by the Petbarn Foundation.
