We’re looking for a confident, compassionate veterinarian who thrives in a fast-paced environment and brings stong clinical judgement to every case. You’re someone who works calmly under pressure, communicates clearly with both teams and clients, and is committed to delivering high-quality, welfare-focused care to every animal who walks through our doors.

What You’ll Do

In this role, you will:

  • Deliver high-quality medical and surgical care to animals presented through our hospital, Inspectorate, and community programs.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed medical records for all patients, ensuring compliance with welfare legislation and RSPCA policies.
  • Diagnose, treat, and manage disease control and herd health across shelter and hospital populations.
  • Provide clinical leadership and mentorship to veterinary nurses, students, and support staff.
  • Assess and provide expert opinions or court evidence for animals involved in cruelty or neglect cases.
  • Perform a variety of surgical procedures, including high-volume desexing, diagnostics, and emergency care.
  • Collaborate closely with Animal Care, Inspectorate, and Community Outreach teams to achieve positive welfare outcomes.
  • Contribute to staff education, training, and community engagement events that promote animal health and welfare.
  • Uphold RSPCA’s values, Code of Conduct, and commitment to safety, compassion, and respect in all work.

What You’ll Bring to the Role

  • Minimum of 2 - 5 years’ experience working as a veterinarian (shelter or clinical setting).
  • Bachelor of Veterinary Science (or Australian-recognised equivalent).
  • Proven experience in medical, surgical, or emergency care (welfare or shelter experience a bonus).
  • Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills with a calm, pragmatic approach.
  • Can stay calm, think fast, and make sound clinical calls under pressure.
  • Clear, confident communication - written, verbal, and when required, in court or media settings.
  • Genuine empathy and resilience to manage both the rewards and challenges of shelter medicine.
  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to support, guide, and work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organisation, and record-keeping.
  • Physical capability to perform manual handling tasks (up to 10kg).

The Royal Children's Hospital (RCH) has been providing outstanding care for Victoria's children and their families for over 147 years.

We are the major specialist paediatric hospital in Victoria and our care extends to children from Tasmania, southern New South Wales and other states around Australia and overseas.

With a passionate, highly skilled and committed staff campus wide of over 5,000, we provide a full range of clinical services, tertiary care and health promotion and prevention programs for children and young people.

We are the designated state-wide major trauma centre for paediatrics in Victoria and a Nationally Funded Centre for cardiac and liver transplantation.

When it comes to training and research we partner with the very best. Our campus partners, the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute (MCRI) and The University of Melbourne Department of Paediatrics, along with the RCH Foundation, are on site with the hospital in Parkville. In 2016–17, more than 85,654 children attended our Emergency Department, 322,291 specialist clinic appointments were held which was almost 70,000 more than the previous year, more than 17,000 surgeries were performed and more than 48,552 children were admitted to our wards.
