Job Description

About Us:

RSL LifeCare is a for‑purpose organisation delivering leading veteran support and aged care services. For more than 100 years, we have been committed to supporting veterans and their families, and our vision remains constant: to create proud communities where people live their best

Joining RSL LifeCare means becoming part of a large, mission‑driven organisation where your skills, compassion and commitment will be valued—and where you can make a meaningful difference in the lives of the people we serve.

About the role:

We are looking for a Veteran Housing Peer Worker to join our Homes for Heroes team on a part-time basis (3 days per week).

This role is designed for someone with lived or living experience of military service and housing instability or homelessness who is ready to use that experience intentionally and safely to support other veterans.

You will walk alongside veterans as they prepare for and transition from Homes for Heroes into long-term housing, helping them build confidence, strengthen community connections and work towards sustainable independence.

Working within a broader housing team, you will provide trauma-informed, strengths-based peer support that recognises each veteran's unique experiences, choices and goals. Through mentoring, practical support, service navigation and genuine connection, you will help veterans identify and build on their strengths while supporting successful housing and wellbeing outcomes.

This role requires regular travel to support veterans within the community as they establish themselves in long-term housing and reconnect with local supports and services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Peer Support and Engagement: Build respectful, authentic and trusting relationships with veterans through the safe and intentional use of lived experience. Foster hope, connection and self-determination while supporting veterans through their housing journey.
  • Transition and Sustainment Support: Walk alongside veterans as they prepare for and move into long-term housing. Support tenancy readiness, daily living skills, confidence building, problem solving and connection to local communities and supports.
  • Strengths-Based Service Navigation: Assist veterans to access services and strengthen natural support networks. Support veterans to navigate housing, health, wellbeing, veteran and community services through practical guidance and warm referrals.
  • Team Collaboration and Advocacy: Work collaboratively within a team, contribute lived experience perspectives and support continuous improvement of veteran-focused services. Advocate for veteran voice, choice and dignity while maintaining appropriate peer work boundaries.

About You:

  • Lived or living experience of military service and housing instability or homelessness.
  • Ability to use lived experience intentionally, safely and professionally to support others.
  • Understanding of peer support principles and the value of lived experience as a form of expertise.
  • Understanding of trauma-informed, recovery-oriented and strengths-based practice.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trust and rapport with veterans.
  • Ability to work independently in community settings and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Current Australian Driver Licence and willingness to undertake regular travel throughout the region.
  • Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work, Community Services or similar is desirable and willingness to undertake required training.
  • Knowledge of veteran services, homelessness services, DVA and community support pathways would be highly regarded.

Our benefits:

  • Not-for-profit tax benefits - salary packaging of up to $15,900 per year. This allows you to reduce your taxable income by receiving part of your salary as tax-free benefits like super contributions, car leasing, and more.
  • Staff discounts across 700 select retail stores through Maxxia Rewards
  • Fitness Passport
  • Team-building activities, wellbeing days, and volunteering opportunities.
  • Leave Loading - 17.5% pay top up on paid leave
  • Plus, you will be working with a truly supportive, committed and loyal team who are dedicated to enhancing the lives of our veterans and their families

Our commitment to diversity:

We are proud to stand for our unique values: Do the Right Thing, Aim Higher, Care from the Heart, and Act as One team.

We welcome and encourage applications from people across our diverse community, especially from Veterans, current serving ADF personnel, their families and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants. We believe everyone has the right to feel safe, respected, valued and heard regardless of their gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity or disability.

It is a mandatory requirement for a team member working in the Aged Care sector to have a valid Police Check or a valid National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) check, or potentially both, to undertake the inherent requirements of the role. Clearances must be verified prior to commencing employment with RSL LifeCare.
