Job Description

In this role as the Vessel Engineer, you will ensure that the Tender vessel is fully operational; fueled and supplied prior to starting tender functions and the vessel has all needed gear to perform the tendering it is participating in. You will be responsible to make sure all equipment is tested and operational including the RSW system prior to starting operations.

Essential Functions/Qualifications

The responsibilities of the position include the following:

  • Engages in daily operation of vessel including taking wheel watches and participating on deck operations during fish loading.
  • Management of all preventive maintenance programs on all onboard engineering systems.
  • Effectively coordinates with all vessel crew to ensure safe, efficient operation of vessel.
  • Provides required information for the proposed system modifications, upgrades, or replacement parts as needed for the vessel to the port engineer or vessel manager.
  • Communicates closely with the port engineer to obtain vendor and shore support when necessary to minimize downtime and maintain maximum efficiency when engaged in tendering operations.
  • Initiates or delegates the engineering response to unsafe or potentially hazardous work areas.
  • Maintains ship fuel and discharge logs.
  • Monitoring and maintaining all vessel systems to ensure the best quality of fish on board. This is very essential to our company, and you must make sure fish quality is one of the main focuses while taking fish and maintaining temperatures to keep quality exceptional.
  • Making sure to follow all policies of Silver Bay Seafoods and the Coast Guard rules are adhered too. We assume all workers are free of illegal drugs every day while under our employment and not reporting for or being on the job under the influence of alcohol, narcotics, or drugs.
  • Participates in drills, required safety training, and any other company required courses.
  • Assisting and overseeing ship repairs on company vessels if your skill set is needed for a project. This may be a vessel other than the one you are working on.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Communication: As a Vessel Engineer you must keep the captain informed of needs for the vessel. Then be prepared to have supporting part numbers for the port engineer or vessel manager to obtain the right parts needed.
  • Organizational skills: The Vessel Engineer must be diligent on keeping logs of regular maintenance, fuel transfers and keep track of parts inventory on the vessel. Many of our vessels use similar equipment and having a knowledge of parts on board is critical if we have a breakdown on the water.
  • Professionalism: Silver Bay holds our Engineers to a higher standard and expectations. We believe that we hire the most capable and competent engineers that hold safety and maintaining the onboard systems as their top priority.

Interpersonal

Education and Experience

  • Must have valid drivers
  • Marine Safety Drill Instructor - prepare your crew to effectively teach cold-water survival procedures, the use of marine safety equipment, and vessel safety drills.
  • Must be CPR and First Aid certified
  • Must be an experienced as a Vessel Captain, Engineer, or have other Maritime and vessel knowledge.
  • A Ship or Boat Captain must have in-depth knowledge of cargo storage, vessel maintenance and navigation.
  • You must be proficient in any software on the vessel, able to use it day-to-day or in an emergency.

Work Environment and Schedule

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to extreme cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Physical Demands

The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee must be able to climb or descend one or more set of steep stairs or vertical ladders both inside and outside in all weather conditions. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision and depth perception. The employee is required to distinguish shades of color to identify abnormalities and/or defects in food products.
