MITACs Research Student (Fall2026)

In this role,you’lltackle a hands-on researchprojectapplyingcutting-edgeAI techniques to real-world financial crime problems – including fraud and money laundering detection.
Youdon’tneed to have all theanswerson day one –we'llsupport you with the resources, mentorship, and team connections to make your research impactful.
Note: Applicants must be an active Masters or PhD student at Memorial University for the entire duration of the internship
What You'll Do:
Build a research projectfrom conception to implementation, focusedon fraud and money laundering detection.
Applyadvanced AI techniques to real-world financial crime problems using production datasets.
Collaborate with teammates across our AI research and product teams.
Writean academic paper/report based on research findings
Present results at NasdaqVerafin’sAIKnowledge Exchange
What We're Looking For:
Students currently andcontinuingenrollmentin aMastersor PhD Programat Memorial University, with continued enrollment through the full duration of the internship.
Proficiencyin Python and otherrelevantprogramming languages
Strong data analysis skills and ability to work independently on research.
Eagerness to learn, ask questions, and take on new challenges.
Good communicationand collaboration skills in team environments.
Nice-to-Have:
Experience with machine learning frameworks and methodologies
Familiarity withcloud platforms such as AWS (SageMaker, S3)and data tools.
Knowledge of Large Language Models and their applications
