The North Carolina Forest Service (NCFS) is designated as an emergency response Division and is a team of professionals who provide forest protection, resource management and environmental education to the residents and landowners of North Carolina through a variety of programs. The NCFS provides services to the 100 counties in North Carolina.

Position responsibilities: Safely operates road and culvert maintenance equipment such as fork-lift; front end loader; farm tractors from 20-120 horsepower and implements; large dump trucks; motor graders; backhoes; and tractor-mounted cutters/mowers. Loads dump trucks with rock or fill, and hauls loads to areas of culvert and road repair. Grades and levels roads and ditches for range personnel access, fire/crash efforts, and recreational access to the areas on the property opened to the public. Digs ditches and replaces damaged pipe for proper road drainage. Operates brush cutters for the maintenance of road and trail right of way. Responsible for operation and maintenance of heavy equipment that may be assigned. Must perform minor repairs and assist district mechanic with major repairs. Responsible for fabrication of assigned equipment as needed. Other duties may include assisting with information and education programs, a variety of forest management activities, mowing, prescribed burning, and other suppression and pre-suppression services or other tasks as assigned.

Work may involve travelling away from home for extended periods of time. Work hours are typically 8-5, Mon-Fri, but some work functions require evening, holiday, and/or weekend work.

NC Forest Service has emergency response duties mandated by General Statute. Wildfire and disaster/emergency assistance require year-round readiness, 24/7 and may require 7-day work weeks, extended hours and on-call/emergency call-back availability. Overnight travel is sometimes required.

Environmental exposures are adverse weather, forest pest, falling limbs, hunters, cramped conditions, intense heat, dust, smoke and hazardous debris. Occasional heavy lifting required.

Participates on incident management teams as assigned.

Recruitment Range- $33,902-$59,327

  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Skilled in performing minor equipment repairs.
  • Ability to operate and maintain heavy equipment such as farm tractors, motor graders, excavators.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player.
  • Service oriented with the ability to listen and work cooperatively with others.

Minimum Education and Experience
