General Description and Classification Standards: Performs semi-skilled work involving the operation and maintenance of vehicles and equipment. Duties may include running diagnostic tests on vehicles, completing work requests, performing fleet management tasks, reporting, and maintaining equipment which includes tow trucks, fork lifts, battery power packs, auto code scanners, key cutters and other equipment used in the daily operation of the garage.

Supervision Received:

Works under direct supervision and follows standard procedures and written instructions to accomplish assigned tasks.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operates and maintains equipment, including tow trucks, fork lifts, battery power packs, auto code scanners, key cutters and other equipment used in the daily operation of the garage.
  • Writes service requests; opens and closes work orders.
  • Completes work requests.
  • Reviews vehicle service history.
  • Verifies warranty status.
  • Test drives vehicles to assess performance.
  • Adheres to inspection procedure checklist.
  • Completes preventative maintenance checks.
  • Completes maintenance or repairs; advises vehicle status.
  • Assists with fleet management.
  • Assesses repair or service needs of vehicle; runs diagnostic tests on vehicles.
  • Maintains parts inventory and orders parts as needed.
  • Schedules towing for disabled vehicles if required, arranges pick-up or dispatches operable vehicles to applicable service facility for repair.
  • Performs post service inspections.
  • Ensures cleanliness and safety of shop.
  • Assists with reporting; compiles statistical information regarding labor, vehicle downtime and repair history.
  • May oversee temporary or contract workers as needed.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

This is a partial listing of necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job successfully, it is not an exhaustive list.

  • Knowledge of automotive terminology and principals of automotive repair.
  • Skill in the use of computers.
  • Skill in troubleshooting vehicle maintenance issues and in the care and use of basic mechanic tools.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, internal and external customers.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience – High school diploma

Completion of a one (1) year technical or vocational course of study in the appropriate area. Two (2) years of experience in general automotive and collision repair.

Licensures and Certifications – Valid State of Georgia CDL License or the ability to obtain one within six (6) months.

Preferred Requirements – Three (3) years experience in general automotive and collision repair. ASE Certified Mechanic in general automotive repair and collision.

Work Environment:

Required physical, lifting, and sensory capabilities are requirements to perform the job successfully. Typical environmental conditions associated with job.

Lifting Requirements:

Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
