Vehicle Maintenance Managers are responsible for the management of the vehicle maintenance staff at assigned facilities. This position manages the facilities' maintenance function in order to maintain a safe, reliable, and cost-effective fleet of vehicles and/or equipment, and an adequate supply of containers. Managers hire, train, coach, evaluate, counsel, and manage the performance of the maintenance staff with an emphasis on safety and productivity.

Responsibilities of Position:

  • Manages the maintenance staff, including hiring, training, scheduling work assignments, performance managing, disciplining, and authorizing overtime ensuring all work is performed in a safe manner in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations and company policies
  • Proactively regularly communicates with operations and others regarding the status of fleet vehicles, containers and/or other equipment
  • Controls maintenance costs relating to personnel, purchasing, inventory control, and outsourcing of repairs and works with controller to participate in budget process
  • Analyzes trends in road calls, equipment breakdowns, and shop hours; takes appropriate action to address immediate issues and implements preventative procedures to reduce recurring issues
  • Maintains an ongoing preventive maintenance program to ensure vehicle safety and operating efficiency
  • Trains and directs employees to improve shop productivity
  • Monitors and enforces quality and safety standards and ensures all compliance goals are met or exceeded
  • Ensures completion of daily duties and ensures that all productivity goals are met or exceeded
  • Performs and conducts performance evaluations, monitors and tracks employee attendance, and completes disciplinary actions/meetings
  • Works cross-functionally to maintain a positive work atmosphere by performing and communicating in a manner that promotes good relationships with customers, clients, coworkers, employees, and managers
  • Maintains accurate and organized maintenance, compliance, and operational records to ensure regulatory compliance and support efficient shop operations
  • Assists with thorough investigations of vehicle accidents, equipment damage, and workplace injuries to identify root causes and implement corrective actions
  • Conducts employee observations to ensure all procedures are being followed
  • Prepares, analyzes, and presents accurate, timely operational reports, maintenance metrics, and performance data to support informed decision-making and continuous improvement
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • This position will manage 1 to 10 employees
  • This position will oversee and direct other managers

Skills & Abilities Needed for Position:

  • Computer skills; working knowledge of Windows applications
  • Must be able to work independently, make decisions, prioritize work, and resolve problems
  • Excellent verbal & written communication skills
  • Ability to understand and use repair manuals, electrical wiring, and schematics necessary to troubleshoot
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and inspire teams

Experience & Knowledge Needed for Position:

  • 3 - 5 years of previous management experience
  • 3 - 5 years performing repairs and maintenance on diesel-powered, heavy vehicles, hydraulics, equipment, and related components preferred
  • Knowledge and understanding of OSHA and DOT rules and regulations

Physical Requirements in a Regular Workday:

  • Frequently lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 10 lbs
  • Occasionally lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 50 lbs
  • Rarely lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 100 lbs
  • Frequently working outside in changing temperatures, wet/humid conditions
  • Continuously working in areas of dust, odors, mist, gases, and other airborne matter
  • Frequently stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling
  • Frequently climbing and/or balancing
  • Frequently sitting/standing/walking

Additional Working Conditions/Aspects:

  • Possible exposure to high traffic conditions and/or tight driving areas
  • Exposure to residential and commercial waste
  • Ability to travel between offices, as required
  • Ability to work flexible hours; expected to work nights and weekends as needed
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, and/or holidays
  • Must be available for 24-hour emergency calls
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States
  • Valid driver’s license (if applicable)
  • Must successfully complete pre-employment testing
  • Must be able to read and speak the English language
