Job Description

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Senior Duct VDC Designer to join our Calgary, Edmonton (Leduc), or Vancouver Design team. This role focuses on modeling, coordinating, and developing ductwork and mechanical systems into fully fabricable, installable virtual models using Revit. You will work closely with engineering, construction, and VDC leadership to ensure systems are efficient, coordinated, code-compliant, and cost-effective.

Why This Role Matters
Virtual Design & Construction plays a critical role in the successful delivery of our mechanical projects. As a Senior Duct VDC Designer, your work directly supports constructability, prefabrication, cost control, and installation efficiency—helping Modern Niagara deliver high-quality mechanical systems that meet both project and client expectations.

Key Impact / Purpose
The VDC Designer is responsible for advancing consultant designs into coordinated, optimized, and install-ready models. By improving routing, resolving clashes early, and supporting prefabrication strategies, this role contributes to safer installations, reduced rework, and overall project success.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain detailed 3D mechanical models in Revit, with a primary focus on ductwork / sheet metal systems
  • Further develop engineering consultant designs into fabricable, installable, and coordinated virtual models
  • Model and assist with at least two of the following disciplines:

- Ductwork systems
- Mechanical rooms and spool drawings for prefabrication
- Mechanical and domestic distribution systems

  • Optimize routing to reduce material and labor costs, improve constructability, and support installation sequencing
  • Ensure systems meet code requirements, project specifications, and QA/QC standards
  • Create and review final drawings for site installation, ensuring accuracy of dimensions, materials, and coordination
  • Collaborate closely with the VDC Project Lead and Project Superintendent to align with project strategies
  • Use BIM coordination and clash detection tools to resolve conflicts prior to construction
  • Assess project requirements and collaborate with engineers and project managers on design feasibility
  • Support project delivery schedules and contribute to profitability through effective use of VDC technologies
  • Continuously optimize mechanical room layouts for efficient use of space and equipment operation
  • Communicate clearly with multidisciplinary teams throughout all project phases

Must-Haves:

  • 5+ years of Revit experience, preferably in duct / sheet metal design
  • Post-secondary diploma in Mechanical or Construction Technology, or Red Seal Sheet Metal certification
  • Experience in the mechanical contracting trade (HVAC, plumbing, piping, sheet metal, etc.)
  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems, shop drawings, and relevant codes and standards
  • Proficiency with Revit and familiarity with BIM coordination workflows
  • Excellent attention to detail, spatial awareness, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

Nice-to-Haves:

  • Knowledge of CAD-to-CAM processes
  • Experience with Navisworks, Autodesk Construction Cloud, Revizto, or similar BIM software
  • Background working in an engineering, manufacturing, or construction design environment

This is a replacement position. Expected annual compensation; $85,000 - $100,000.

About Modern Niagara

We build for life.

We build for the life that happens indoors. We know that Canadians spend the vast majority of their time inside buildings. From receiving healthcare to legislating and representing citizens to participating in sports and other activities, we make any space comfortable and healthy for those who use it. We are committed to providing exceptional occupant experiences.

We build for the life of the building. Buildings can best reach the objectives they were set out to achieve when we look at them over the course of their entire life, including design, construction, operation, maintenance, and improvement. For us, using data and evidence to inform decisions provides us and our partners with an effective path towards high-performing, sustainable facilities.

We build for the life of our communities. We know that buildings do not exist in a vacuum. Buildings, streets, and the people that occupy and use them are but a few of the ingredients that make up our cities and communities. We believe that nurturing social equity, enabling economic activity, and reducing our impact on the environment in all that we do – including how we build and maintain our buildings – is integral to playing a positive role in sustaining our communities for us and for future generations.

Modern Niagara helps building owners, managers, and general contractors achieve their objectives by meeting the mechanical, electrical, integrated building technology, and building services needs of their buildings across Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto, Southwestern Ontario, and Ottawa. We also develop custom, turnkey solutions to help reach the desired outcomes.
