Schedule:

  • Monday–Friday, 07:00–17:30 (40 hours/week)

  • On-call: 1 night per week and every 5th weekend

  • Must reside within a 45-minute response time for on-call coverage

  • Rotational holiday call coverage required

The Vascular Access Nurse performs sterile, invasive bedside procedures including the insertion of PICC lines (central lines), midlines, and peripheral IVs using ultrasound and ECG guidance. This role requires the ability to interpret ECG rhythms and manage potential complications associated with central line placement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Insert PICC, Midline, and peripheral IV catheters using sterile technique and ultrasound guidance

  • Interpret ECG rhythms during central line placement and respond to related complications

  • Develop, update, and implement best-practice protocols for vascular access

  • Collaborate with nursing units to ensure effective application of IV therapy protocols

  • Provide de-clotting and troubleshooting support for existing PICCs and Midlines

  • Serve inpatient and outpatient departments including nursing units, ED, ECT, SPA, 1E, 1C, and Medical Imaging

  • Complete SMH PICC training and demonstrate all related competencies within 90 days of hire

Qualifications:

  • Experience: Minimum 2 years of nursing experience in ICU, ED, or PACU

  • Certifications:

    • BLS (CPR) certification required

    • ACLS certification required within 6 months of hire

  • Successful completion of SMH PICC training program within the first 90 days

Additional Requirements:

  • Wear hospital-provided scrubs

  • 12-week orientation with a designated preceptor

  • Ability to push a rolling supply cart and transport an ultrasound machine throughout the hospital

Education, Licensures & Certifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program
  • Active RN license in Illinois required
  • Current BLS/CPR certification required
