Varsity Cheerleading Head Coach

2026-2027 School Year


of Position The High School Varsity Cheerleading Head Coach is responsible for leading, developing, and managing the school's cheer program, including both sideline cheer during the fall athletic season and competitive cheer during the winter season. This position provides leadership, instruction, and mentorship to student-athletes, promoting school spirit, teamwork, discipline, and personal growth both on and off the field. The coach works collaboratively with the Athletic Director to ensure program success, compliance with all governing rules, and alignment with district and MHSAA standards.

The ideal candidate demonstrates strong leadership, a commitment to student development, and the ability to build a positive, respectful, and competitive team culture.

Compensation: The Varsity Cheerleading Head Coach will be paid in accordance with the CEA contract "Appendix B"

Qualifications:

  • Excellent leadership qualities
  • Passion for developing youth both athletically and personally
  • Experience supervising others is desired
  • Coaching experience is desired
  • Prior competitive cheer experience preferred
  • Must be willing to dedicate afternoons and evenings during the season for practices and events
  • Must successfully pass:
    • Must receive a satisfactory response to 4205-F Authorization for Release of Information and Employee History Check Under 1996 P.A.189 of 1996; MCL380.1230b
    • Law enforcement background checks with fingerprinting.
    • Personal and professional reference background check.

  • Help athletes develop strong values, character, and sportsmanship
  • Observe, evaluate, and analyze athlete performance and skill development
  • Provide instruction and coaching to correct mistakes and improve performance
  • Work collaboratively with the Athletic Director to maintain uniforms and equipment inventory
  • Assist in developing and managing a program-wide budget in coordination with the Athletic Director
  • Develop and oversee fundraising initiatives to support the cheer program
  • Promote and instill sportsmanship, teamwork, and positive school spirit
  • Foster leadership skills and personal responsibility in student-athletes
  • Build team unity and positive team culture
  • Develop self-confidence and resilience in athletes
  • Maintain effective and professional communication with parents, athletes, and the Athletic Director
  • Lead and supervise the varsity cheer team at all football games, including playoff games
  • Lead and coach the competitive cheer team during the winter season
  • Complete and maintain all MHSAA requirements by established deadlines, including CPR certification, rules meetings, and CAP training


*Beginning in 2016-17 school year, the MHSAA requires all 1st time head varsity coaches to complete a Coaches Advancement Program (CAP) class in order to be eligible to coach in any postseason events
