Summary

Teacher works directly with an assigned group of school-aged campers (Kindergarten–5th grade), leading and co-leading daily craft, gym, and themed activity blocks during BPRW's Vacation Camp sessions and potential After School programming. Teacher works under the direction of the Program Director and Recreation Specialist, in cooperation with fellow Teachers, to deliver a safe, fun, and engaging programming .

BPRW Vacation Camps run during Burlington School District's scheduled school breaks: February Break, April Break, November Break (Nov 23–25, 2026) and December Break (Dec 28-31, 2026). Additional sessions may be added; staff should be available for as many sessions as possible.

This position would also be for the potential new After School program (beginning in January 2027) as well, which would serve students every weekday from 2:50-6:00 p.m.

Each Vacation Camp session provides 9 hours of licensed child care per day (approximately 7:30 AM–5:30 PM; staff report earlier and stay later for setup/close).

This role is a great fit for current or former classroom teachers, paraeducators, and youth-enrichment staff looking for meaningful, well-structured work during school breaks and after school — the daily schedule, activities, and themes are planned in advance by the Recreation Specialists, so Teachers can focus on delivering a great day rather than building the program from scratch.

Pay Grade: $20.91 - $24.11 Hourly

Remote Tier 1: Zero (0) days remote/week

Examples of duties

• Available to work all scheduled Vacation Camp sessions (November 2026, December 2026, February 2027 & April 2027), including a pre-session planning/training and the full run of each session. This would also include the After School program (Weekdays until June, beginning in January 2027)
• Lead and co-lead planned craft, gym, and themed activity blocks for an assigned group, following the session's written daily schedule.
• Maintain state-required staff-to-child ratios and active supervision at all times, including during transitions, meals/snack, outdoor time, and free play.
• Supervise your group during the session's field trip or on-site guest presenter day.
• Follow all departmental and state license rules & regulations.
• Assist in planning and delivery of exciting, age-appropriate activities and enrichment programming, in partnership with the Director.
• Check activity areas for safety hazards and report deficiencies to supervisor.
• Support a positive, inclusive classroom culture, including recognizing campers who are meeting behavior expectations, not just responding to those who aren't.
• Attend staff meetings and staff trainings as required.
• Report all accidents and incidents occurring within jurisdiction to supervisor.
• Administer proper First Aid as required.
• Assist with beginning-of-session set up and end-of-session take down of camp spaces.
• Required to be on site 15 minutes before the program starts for setup and preparation, and to help with cleanup after the program ends each day.
• Participate in a feedback-driven evaluation process.

Qualifications

• Ability to actively support City diversity, equity, and cultural competency efforts within stated job responsibilities and work effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies.
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion as evidenced by ongoing trainings and professional development.
• Previous experience working with children in a group or individualized setting required.
• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• College coursework or a degree in Education, Childhood Development, Family Studies, or Recreation preferred; current or former K-12 teachers and paraeducators strongly encouraged to apply.
• Ability to supervise and organize groups of children for activity programs.
• Ability to deal effectively with discipline problems, co-workers, and supervisors.
• Knowledge of safety principles and practices as they apply to group activities.
• Knowledge of a variety of recreation/leisure activities and group games.
• A cooperative attitude and a team player.
• First Aid/CPR certification, or the ability to become certified before work begins.
• Enthusiasm, patience, a desire to work with children, and creativity.
• Ability to pass a State of Vermont Background Check for Childcare Providers and be fingerprinted as part of the process.
• Complete required trainings before the start of each session, as part of child care licensing.
• Must be at least 18 years of age by the start of the session.
