UX/UI Design Intern

Our Summer Internship Program is a supervised program designed to enhance professional development by providing the chance to “test drive” Gentherm and step into our organization to learn about our culture and career possibilities for your future. Our Summer program formally runs from May 17, 2027 through August 6, 2027.​

The interns will follow a cohort-style program with 15 other students, as they navigate learning Gentherm, our Mission, Values, and our Business Goals. The cohort will have the opportunity to interact and learn from Executive Leaders across the organizations through monthly learning sessions, as well as participate in both community and company events.

Students complete a predetermined project related to department goals and the student’s area of study. The program is designed to be an experiential learning that integrates knowledge learned in the classroom and practical application in a professional setting.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Support the design and development of intuitive, visually engaging user interfaces for digital products, product demonstrations and interactive experiences across multiple product lines.
• Assist in translating technical product capabilities and engineering concepts into clear, user-centered experiences that communicate functionality, value and intended use.
• Collaborate with UX designer, engineers, product managers, researchers and creative team members to understand user needs, technical requirements and project objectives.
• Create wireframes, user flows, mockups and interactive prototypes using Figma and other applicable design tools.
• Support the development of functional prototypes and demonstrations using foundational front-end technologies such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
• Assist in implementing and refining interface components, interactions, animations, transitions and micro interactions within prototypes and demonstration environments.
• Apply motion-design and animation principles to help communicate product behavior, state changes, user interactions and experience concepts that may be difficult to demonstrate through static designs alone.
• Create supporting motion graphics, interface animations and visual assets using tools such as Adobe After Effects and Adobe Creative Suite.
• Support user research, usability testing and occupant studies through research preparation, observation, documentation and organization of findings.
• Assist with analyzing and visually communicating research findings, usability observations and user feedback to help inform design decisions.
• Apply foundational knowledge of user-centered design, human factors and ergonomics when developing interfaces and interactions for automotive and other product environments.
• Support the design and implementation of interfaces for prototypes, global demonstration properties and live product environments while maintaining consistency with established UX and visual standards.
• Contribute to the development and maintenance of UX systems, component libraries, interaction patterns and design documentation.
• Collaborate with engineering teams to better understand technical feasibility and develop design solutions that can realistically translate from concept to implementation.
• Assist with troubleshooting and making minor updates to existing prototype code under the guidance of UX and engineering team members.
• Participate in design reviews and critique sessions, incorporating feedback and developing the ability to clearly communicate design thinking and rationale.
• Prepare UX concepts, interactive prototypes, animations and supporting visuals for internal presentations, customer demonstrations and stakeholder reviews.
• Manage assigned tasks and projects while developing the ability to balance multiple priorities, deadlines and evolving project requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

• Must be currently enrolled in school and have finished their freshman year by the start of the internship program.
• Able to be on-site 4 days a week (up to 5) at our facilities in Novi, Michigan
• Familiar with Microsoft products.
• Currently pursuing a degree, certificate or equivalent coursework in UX/UI design, interaction design, digital design, animation, front-end development or a related discipline.
• Portfolio demonstrating foundational skills in UX/UI design, interaction design, prototyping, visual design, motion design or related digital experiences.
• Working knowledge of Figma or similar interface and prototyping tools.
• Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite.
• Foundational experience with animation or motion-design tools such as Adobe After Effects.
• Basic understanding of HTML, CSS and JavaScript and an interest in developing functional interactive experiences.
• Understanding of user-centered design principles and an interest in human factors, ergonomics and user behavior.
• Strong visual design, problem-solving and organizational skills.
• Ability to receive feedback, iterate on work and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.
