Job Description

Business Services at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks driver applications for the UVA Ride and UVA FlexRide services for the department of Parking and Transportation. UVA Ride Drivers provide overnight fare-free shuttle service for University students and staff. UVA FlexRide drivers provide curb-to-curb transportation services to members of the University community who are unable to use fixed-route transportation services due to a disability. Candidates may indicate their preferred program at the time of interview. Successful candidates will be notified of what program position they are being offered.

UVA Ride DRIVER POSITION

UVA Ride drivers work within the Department of Parking and Transportation to provide overnight transportation service to the University community. They operate vans and other fleet vehicles on an overnight rideshare service that operates between fixed pickup and drop-off points. The schedule for this position will involve working weekday and weekend nights into early mornings. STANDARD SERVICE HOURS ARE 10:00PM TO 5:00AM, 7 nights per week during UVA academic sessions and 8:00PM TO 5:00AM during Recess service over the summer and winter breaks.

Responsibilities:

  • Operate any/all vans and other fleet vehicles safely by applying established defensive driving principles.
  • Follow standard UVA Transportation operating procedures and comply with Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles and Transportation regulations.
  • Receive ride requests via a department-issued mobile device (tablet) and document passenger pick-ups and drop-offs.
  • Ensure that all appropriate logs are kept and that any information affecting safe vehicle operation is reported.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

UVA FlexRide DRIVER Position

FlexRide drivers work within the Department of Parking and Transportation to provide curb-to-curb transportation services to members of the University community who are unable to use fixed-route transportation services due to a disability. They operate vans and other fleet vehicles on a rideshare service that operates in and around the UVA Grounds based on fixed-route proximity. Schedules for this position may include some early mornings and/or late nights as well as weekends, but the primary hours for shifts will center around the highest demand periods (Monday through Friday during University class times). STANDARD SERVICE HOURS ARE 7:00AM to 7:00PM, Mondays through Fridays. This position requires a strong focus on accessibility, dignity, professionalism, and customer service skills and carries some physical demands associated with assisting patrons into and out of vehicles along with stowing and deploying various mobility devices.

Responsibilities:

  • Operate any/all vans and other fleet vehicles safely by applying established defensive driving principles.
  • Safely transport passengers with disabilities and individualized mobility needs to assigned destinations in accordance with ADA requirements and departmental procedures.
  • Follow standard UVA Transportation operating procedures and comply with Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles and Transportation regulations.
  • Receive ride requests via a department-issued mobile device and document passenger pickups and drop-offs.
  • Assist passengers courteously, respectfully, and empathetically with boarding and exiting the vehicle as necessary and secure/deploy passengers with mobility devices or other assistive equipment.
  • Ensure that all appropriate logs are kept and that any information affecting safe vehicle operation is reported.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

This position requires a pre-employment drug screening and DMV license check.

Base pay for this position is $19/hr. In addition, predetermined shift differential dependent on hours and days worked is applied on top of hourly base pay.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Current undergraduate student at UVA
  • Experience: None
  • Valid Virginia Driver's License. Must have a -3 or above DMV point balance via a safe driving record.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • The ability to follow and enforce specific instructions and the ability to communicate effectively with the public and over two-way radio is essential. Applicants must be able to read, write, and speak in the English language.
  • General knowledge of computer usage; ability to type, use email, and interface with web-based systems for payroll and performance management is essential.
  • The ability to drive any/all vans or support vehicles.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Safe operation of UVA Transportation vans and fleet vehicles requires sustained sitting, driving, pushing/pulling (steering wheel and various controls), repetitive motion, use of both hands, use of either hand, fine finger manipulation, and wrist movement. Safe operation also includes repetitive motion with right ankle/foot, possessing the strength and dexterity to fully depress the service brake and accelerator present on vehicles within the Parking and Transportation fleet.

Boarding/alighting UVA Transportation vehicles requires the ability to climb stairs (at least one step up/down). Successful operation of ADA Accessible equipment aboard the vehicles requires bending, lifting, and carrying. Either position requires the ability to lift and maneuver mobility devices (up to 50 lbs). All these physical requirements should be considered essential to the position.

Work performed as part of servicing the equipment requires high amounts of standing, walking, and the potential for bending, lifting, and carrying.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Selected candidates will be required to be able to drive any/all vans and support vehicles in the fleet.
