The essential job responsibilities of the Utility Worker 1 are to perform entry level semi-skilled duties required in the installation and maintenance of electric, gas and/or water mains/services and associated equipment.

Qualifications

Qualification Requirements:
To perform the Utility Worker 1 role, you must:
-Successfully complete Placement/Performance Exercises
-Successfully complete Physical Ability/Fit for Duty Testing
-Have a valid driver's license from state of residence
-Obtain a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License from state of residence within trial or probationary period after entering classification

Physical Working Conditions:
Works outside. Subject to inclement weather, traffic, working in proximity of high voltages and hazards of construction work. Subject to emergency work; climbing, balancing, kneeling, bending, pulling, pushing, standing, reaching, heavy lifting/carrying up to 98, stooping, crouching, crawling, working in confined spaces, climbing ladders, feelings, fingering, gripping, hearing, jumping, repetitive motion, seeing, sitting, twisting and walking. Must be able to wear and utilize safety equipment (i.e. ladders, respirator, etc.) in accordance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards and Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Administration (TOSHA) standards.

Electricity is supplied to MLGW by the Tennessee Valley Authority, while natural gas is purchased from a variety of suppliers and transported by three pipeline companies — Texas Gas Transmission Corporation, Trunkline Gas Company and ANR Pipeline Company. Memphis receives its water from one of the largest artesian water systems in the world.

MLGW is led by a president and a five-member board of commissioners who are appointed by the mayor of Memphis and approved by the Memphis City Council.
