Examples of duties

This position focuses on the safe and efficient operation of a modern high-pressure boiler plant at Warren State Hospital. The role requires mechanical skill, steady attention, and the ability to maintain and repair vital plant systems. As a Utility Plant Operator 2, you will perform the following duties:

  • Boiler Operation: Start up and shut down boilers, operate valves, and monitor gauges and digital controls to maintain safe heat and hot water
  • Water Testing: Collect samples, test water quality, and treat systems to ensure correct feedwater conditions
  • Equipment Maintenance: Maintain boilers, pumps, motors, traps, and related systems for safe and efficient operation
  • Emergency Response: Perform manual emergency fire horn operations and make urgent repairs when equipment issues arise
  • Plant Upkeep: Complete preventive maintenance, clean plant areas, and follow safety procedures during all tasks
  • Shift Coverage: Rotate shifts to ensure continuous monitoring and operation of the boiler plant

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 40 hours per week
  • Work hours are 4:00 PM to 12:00 AM, with a rotating schedule including every other weekend.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year of experience as a Utility Plant Operator 1 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • One year of semi-skilled work experience in the operation, maintenance, or repair of industrial, commercial, or institutional utility plant systems and related equipment; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes six months of semi-skilled work experience in the operation, maintenance, or repair of industrial, commercial, or institutional utility plant systems and related equipment.

  • A conditional offer of employment will require a medical examination.
  • This position falls under the provisions of the Older Adult Protective Services Act.
  • Under the Act, a conditional offer of employment will require submission and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports, including but not limited to, PA State Police and FBI clearance.
