Perform shop maintenance, repair and fabrication of tools and equipment in support of energy delivery activities; diagnose and correct the causes of trouble that develop in such equipment. The following list sets forth the principal duties required for the job. This list is not intended to limit assignment of work or the degree of supervision under all operating conditions. Employee may perform miscellaneous, related and incidental work in addition to that specifically outlined below.

What you'll do:

Essential Job Functions & Tasks:

  • Diagnose trouble and perform shop maintenance and repair hand tools, power tools, hydraulic tools, and other associated equipment.

  • Diagnose failures or malfunctions of tools and equipment, make reports to proper parties, and recommend and perform corrective action as required.

  • Fabricate, assemble, maintain and repair tools and equipment.

  • Perform dielectric tests on hot sticks.

  • Fabricate and test grounds.

  • Research tool needs and order tools as needed from outside vendors and AEP Supply Chain.

  • Operate infrared camera and other specialized equipment as needed.

  • Perform work in the field as assigned.

  • Perform miscellaneous facility maintenance duties as assigned.

  • Handle and dispose of waste material, oil leaks, solvents and cleaners using required safety procedures and in accordance with environmental regulations.

  • Use hand, pneumatic and power tools.

  • Operate automotive equipment and its associated equipment and perform duties incidental to the operation of such equipment.

  • Perform duties in accordance with the Company's safety rules, regulations and practices and report unsafe conditions and practices.

  • Maintain tools, equipment and work areas in a clean and orderly condition.

  • Maintain records and submit reports as required.

  • Attend and participate in training as assigned and assist in the training of other employees.

  • Attend and participate in safety meetings and other safety related activities.

  • Direct the work of employees assigned to assist.

  • Report irregularities and abnormal conditions.

  • Assist employees of equal or higher classification.

  • Perform similar or less skilled work.

  • Transportation and Operation of heavy machinery.

What We're Looking for:

Education Requirements listed below:

High school graduate or equivalent education and/or experience.

Work Experience Requirements listed below:

Minimum of two years satisfactory work experience as a Mechanic.

Other Must Haves:

  • Must have performed all the duties of and have all the qualifications of a Utility Mechanic or the equivalent and must qualify through demonstration, examination and/or performance appraisal as determined by the Company.

  • Must have a good working knowledge of shop maintenance, materials, practices, equipment and tools used.

  • Must be able to read, interpret and work from prints, specifications, drawings and diagrams.

  • Must have demonstrated proficiency with PC applications.

  • Must have a good working knowledge of the principles of electricity and the operation and function of shop equipment.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License. Must meet all vehicle operation requirements as designated by federal and/or state law 9.

  • This job requires "recommended" test results from HireVue Line Worker Virtual Job Tryout. This assessment is completed online, is untimed, and typically takes about 45 minutes to complete. Please refer to the Employment Test Prep section of our website https://www.aep.com/careers/testprep/

  • Principal Line of Progression: From: Utility Mechanic To: Higher classification, if qualified

The Physical Demand Level for this job is: H – Heavy Work: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10-20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
