In 1887, the City of Alameda invested $20,000 to install 13 streetlights and a 90-kilowatt generating station to power them. With that investment, the oldest public electric utility west of the Mississippi was established.
Today, Alameda Municipal Power (AMP) continues that legacy of public service. For more than 130 years, AMP has provided safe, reliable, and affordable electricity to the residents and businesses of Alameda. Throughout decades of change and transformation within the utility industry, AMP has remained locally governed and community focused, allowing decisions to be made with the best interests of the Alameda community in mind.
Local ownership enables AMP to reinvest in infrastructure, programs, and services that directly benefit our residents and strengthen the community. By maintaining local control, we can respond to evolving energy needs while delivering long-term value to the island's residents, businesses, and public institutions.
While much has changed since 1887, our commitment has remained constant: providing dependable electric service that our community can rely on. As the energy landscape continues to evolve, AMP will continue to thoughtfully invest in proven and emerging technologies that enhance reliability, improve customer service, support environmental goals, and manage costs responsibly.
The Utility Information Systems (UIS) Division provides the strategic leadership, governance, and oversight of Alameda Municipal Power's technology ecosystem, ensuring that utility systems align with AMP's mission of delivering safe, reliable, and affordable electric service. UIS is responsible for the planning, architecture, security, and lifecycle management of the technologies that support critical utility functions, including customer information systems, advanced metering infrastructure, geographic information systems, operational technology, data platforms, and enterprise applications.
Working across all areas of the organization, UIS drives the modernization of AMP's technology landscape through a balanced approach that emphasizes cybersecurity, operational resilience, data accessibility, and business efficiency. The division establishes technology standards, manages strategic investments, and ensures that information systems remain secure, reliable, and adaptable to the evolving needs of the utility.
Through the thoughtful adoption of emerging technologies, data-driven capabilities, and smart utility solutions, UIS enhances the customer experience, strengthens grid intelligence, supports informed decision-making, and helps position AMP to meet the challenges and opportunities of a rapidly changing energy future while managing risk responsibly.
