Job Description

The APS Engineering Support Division (AES) provides reliable operations and technical support to the Advanced Photon Source user community. AES works to ensure that the Advanced Photon Source maintains its status as a preeminent scientific user facility.

This User Experiment Oversight position in the Experimental Facilities Operations Group of AES will i mplement established work planning and control processes and programs that provide a safe working environment in the Advanced Photon Source (APS) user facilities through the Experiment Safety Assessment Form (ESAF). This role is a member of the Experiment Safety Review Board and reviews and approves APS user experiments utilizing the ESAF system.

Along with other members of the Experimental Facilities Operations group, this position is responsible for the execution of the work planning and control processes specifically tailored to user safety programs. This includes the identification, evaluation, and mitigation of environmental safety and health-related risks, in accordance with the Department of Energy (DOE), Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) and APS policies and procedures. In particular, the User Experiment Oversight participates in various risk assessments, safety walkthroughs and beamline experiment reviews in collaboration with APS management and ANL ES&H coordinators and implements appropriate measures to ensure compliance with ANL and APS Safety requirements and best practices. The User Experiment Oversight will also help to oversee the user Designated Electrical Equipment Inspection (DEEI) program at the APS.

May be required to perform other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

  • Minimum Education and Experience: Bachelors and 4+ years’ experience, Masters and 2+ years’ experience, or equivalent

  • Knowledge of integrated safety management (ISM) practices, DOE safety requirements as well as OSHA and consensus standards made applicable by these requirements (e.g., NFPA, ASME, etc.).

  • Knowledge of "good practices" for radiation, mechanical assembly and chemical laboratories.

  • Knowledge of basic concepts in the physical, chemical, materials and biological sciences.

  • Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

  • Interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, and ability to interact with people at all levels both within and outside the laboratory.

Some education or experience in electrical work is required. This could be satisfied by one or more of the following:

  • An associate's or bachelor's degree in Electronics or Electrical / Computer engineering or completed 20 semester hours of college level electrical courses

  • Have been a Journeyman or Master Electrician and completed an apprenticeship program or completed the Electricity / Electronics course provided by the US Navy or Marines

  • Have been an Electrical Inspector certified by IAEI or ICC
