The Associate Director, Medical Education and Sponsorships Team Member leads the process and execution of External Funding and Medical Education, including Independent Medical Education (IME) Grants, non-accredited Medical Education, Scientific Advancement Grants and Sponsorships, and Quality Improvement Education (QIE) through the assessment of external environment changes, co-development of Medical Education and Sponsorship strategies, tactical execution, and continuous improvement.

In addition, the AD, Medical Education and Sponsorships Team Member is accountable for overseeing the process for other external funding requests (e.g. sponsorships and corporate memberships). The incumbent may be responsible for more than one therapeutic area and/ or disease state and is responsible to cross cover for other TAs as needed.

As the internal expert in Medical Education and Sponsorships, the incumbent uses their knowledge of the process, regulations, policies, etc. to assess grant/funding applications for all assigned external funding requests. Through their knowledge and continuous benchmarking, the incumbent is responsible to recommend process improvement and innovative ways of delivering funding to better meet both customer needs and make it easier for grant/funding applicants to work with Boehringer.

The AD, Medical Education and Sponsorships Team Member chairs review committee meetings, supporting committee stakeholders and decisions as appropriate. The incumbent collaborates with the assigned TA(s) to strategically develop independent needs assessments, educational objective development, and builds request for proposals (RFPs) to meet those objectives. This role monitors and reports all IME, SAG, QIE, and other external funding activity in assigned TAs through the assessment and compilation of audit data and delivering summary presentations (if applicable). In addition, this role develops process changes, identifies methods to improve customer experience and ensures training where needed. The AD, Medical Education and Sponsorships Team Member leads all efforts to inform the business (i.e., Legal & Compliance) on the risk associated with medical education and funding-related initiatives.

This role also requires the cross-functional feedback and expertise into non-accredited company-sponsored medical education activities, primarily disease-state related activities, to ensure appropriate access to timely and relevant data according to educational gap analyses.

Compensation Data

The base salary range for this position is $140,000 to $222,000. The position may be eligible for a role specific discretionary bonus, relocation, and/or other compensation elements. We continuously review market data and may adjust salary ranges as needed in the future. Duties & Responsibilities

• Develops, coordinates, and implements an annual strategic plan with TA CDMA personnel that achieves demonstrated educational results based on medical education needs assessments and TA medical/scientific objectives.
• Supports annual IME planning by collaborating with the Funding Team Lead and across TAs to maintain an aligned and consistent approach to IME planning.
• Develops the strategy and leads the initiation of primary and updated needs assessments to determine unmet medical education needs in assigned TA(s).
• Liaises with TA CDMA personnel and FBM to obtain additional regional medical education needs.
• Validates and finalizes educational objectives, coordinate and obtain TA CDMA, legal/compliance, and other necessary approvals.
• Creates RFPs based on TA educational objectives, coordinate and obtain process required approvals.
• Reviews and determines eligibility (approval or denial) recommendations on all grants in assigned TA, to support high quality activities with the largest potential for improving public health.
• Routes all approval recommendations above determined thresholds to the review committee in a timely fashion.
• Leads TA review committee meetings to present grants recommended for approval and provide educational expertise.
• Provides cross TA support for grant application review when additional need for support is identified by the Funding Team Lead.
• Works collaboratively with the operational Funding Team Members for medical education / SAGs / QIEs. Resolves, and when necessary, triages medical grant applicant issue escalations to appropriate leadership. As directed, and in line with Boehringer policies, provide detailed information to specific grant applicants in response to requests for additional information after grant denial.
• Accountable for overseeing and chairing the review committee process for other external funding types (sponsorships and corporate memberships). Manages all related activities and leads all efforts to inform the business (i.e., legal & compliance) on the risk associated with these initiatives.
• Leads the review committee process evaluating and mitigating risk as it relates to external funding (memberships and sponsorships) for customers (including Patient Advocacy and Professional Medical Associations) in close partnership with compliance and legal.
• Works collaboratively with legal and operational support teams on grant contracts.
• Prioritizes contracts based on business needs.
• Leads process improvement initiatives to the global funding system.
• Liaises with global/corporate functions including Global Process Owners and IT on ensuring business needs are addressed.
• Collaborates with other TA / Med Excellence teams for data analysis and report generation.
• Assists in developing, monitoring, and administering the TA budget for medical education for the fiscal year.
• Provides monthly updates and reports on funding utilization and significant deviation in budget trends / expenditures.
• Delivers regular reports to the CDMA TA which includes regular assessments of programs outcomes.
• Coordinates to attend and audit educational activities supported by Boehringer, as required.
• Collaborates with the Funding Team Lead to develop and maintain the education activity audit questionnaire.
• Analyzes all incoming data from education activity audits and uses this information to score requestors.
• Monitors, evaluates, and provides feedback on industry practices and advise on regulatory changes that are relevant to the implementation of effective and fully compliant medical education programs.
• Monitors and assesses the quality and outcome measures of educational activities supported by Boehringer in assigned TA(s).

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree required preferably in a related scientific or clinical discipline; MA or MS strongly preferred.
• Five-plus (5+) years of industry experience, preferably including cross-functional experiences with marketing, commercial, finance, development and/ or medical affairs.
• Continuing Medical Education experience in a clinical / healthcare setting preferred.
• Professional certification in one more Scientific Communication functions (e.g., CMPP, CHCP, CCRA) preferred.
• Advanced clinical understanding of the disease state of focus preferred.
• Expertise in adult learning theory and design needs assessment, educational program outcome measurement, metric development, and analysis preferred.
• Must be extremely vigilant and use exceptional judgment as it relates to this work as it is an area of high risk to the company if not handled appropriately.
• In-depth knowledge of OIG, FDA and other relevant current government, industry, and organizational guidelines preferred.

Additional Duties & Responsibilities:

• Assists internal and third-party auditors with external compliance and consistency audits of department performance and provide summaries, and process change where needed.
• Assists the Funding Team Lead in supporting the educational needs of the Boehringer organization by ensuring the development of content and delivery of training presentations.
• Examines internal department quality standards through TA reviews and support training and reinforcement of quality grant reviews.
• Collaborates with Legal Operations, Sr. Management, as well as Ethics & Compliance to assess annual maximum limits that may apply to applicants with significant funding agreements with Boehringer, in line with internal policies and procedures.
• Adheres to all aspects of government and healthcare laws, including but not limited to the Boehringer Policy on Grant Support, and the local SOP for educational grants.
• Demonstrates careful communication skills while interacting with external grant applicants with specific information needs related to grant decisions.
• Owns and improves the SAG/QIE process, ensures needed training is provided, and facilitates the tactical execution of SAGs/QIEs.
• Ensures proper documentation, disposition, and follow-up on all reviewed and funded SAG/QIE applications.
