We are seeking an Alternate Instructor to support Army University’s Army Strategic Education Program – Transition Course (ASEP-T), an executive career-transition program for retiring and separating U.S. Army General Officers and their spouses. This is a Key Personnel position. Courses are delivered in person in the National Capital Region (historically the AUSA Conference and Events Center in Arlington, VA) and online, with five (5) five-day courses per year, one (1) Introductory Transition Module, and up to eight (8) Four-Star Executive Sessions annually.

So, what will the Alternate Instructor at Terrestris do?

The Alternate Instructor partners with the Primary Instructor to teach, present, or facilitate the majority of ASEP-T, a five-day executive education course that prepares transitioning General Officers and their spouses to move from senior military leadership into the civilian workforce in accordance with the Veterans Opportunity to Work (VOW) Act, Transition Assistance Program (TAP), and Soldier for Life requirements. The Alternate Instructor steps in as lead whenever the Primary Instructor is unavailable, ensuring at least one qualified instructor is present for the entire course.

Using executive adult learning models and challenging experiential exercises, the Alternate Instructor helps General Officers translate their military experience into civilian executive terms, build transition plans, resumes, and networking strategies, and prepare for interviews and offer negotiations. The Alternate Instructor also provides individual counseling, supports the spouse curriculum, and contributes to continuous course improvement in coordination with the ASEP-T Course Director.

What does a typical day look like for an Alternate Instructor?

You will:

• Co-instruct five (5) five-day ASEP-T courses per year (approximately eight hours per day) for up to 18 General Officers in person or 22 online, plus their spouses.
• Serve as lead instructor when the Primary Instructor is unavailable, ensuring continuity of instruction throughout every course.
• Help develop and maintain a current, modular curriculum adaptable to face-to-face and online delivery (e.g., Zoom, Teams) that meets VOW Act, TAP, Soldier for Life, and Department of Labor requirements.
• Guide participants in building individual transition plans, including pre-separation timelines, realistic career goals, interest/aptitude assessments, and translation of military experience into civilian terms.
• Instruct on resumes/CVs and cover letters, networking plans, LinkedIn and social media, job search methods, personal branding, interviewing, civilian salary scales and negotiation, and post-interview actions.
• Facilitate experiential exercises, including internet- and AI-enabled exercises, resume building, mock interviews, and mock offer negotiations.
• Conduct individual counseling sessions with participants (and spouses, as applicable), including in-depth resume critiques, transition plan feedback, strengths assessments, and networking plan and LinkedIn reviews.
• Support delivery of the integrated spouse curriculum and spouse-specific break-out sessions.
• Support the Day 2 no-host networking event with recently retired General Officers.
• Support the annual one-day Introductory Transition Module (ITM) for up to 200 students and customized Four-Star Executive Sessions, as assigned.
• Provide follow-on coaching (up to two hours per participant for up to 90 days after retirement) on resumes, job search, interviewing, and salary negotiation.
• Help administer pre-course surveys and course evaluations, participate in after action reviews, and contribute to post-course, quarterly, and annual reports.

What qualifications do you look for?

You might be the professional we’re looking for if you have:

• Authorization to permanently work in the United States without sponsorship.
• Ability to pass background checks (NCIC-III and Terrorist Screening Database) for Army installation and facility access. No security clearance is required.
• A master’s degree in business, management, counseling, or a related field; or experience plus recognized industry credentials or certifications in human resources management, career counseling, or career services.
• Military veteran who transitioned within the last ten (10) years at the rank of O-4 or above, or as an E-9 (SGM/CSM).
• Three (3) or more years of experience leading talent management, recruiting, or counseling General Officers or senior military executives.
• Three (3) or more years of experience with executive-level curriculum development and delivery, training or educating an executive-level audience.
• Three (3) or more years of experience working with or for Army Generals, senior military officers, and/or senior civilian executives.
• Two (2) or more years of experience in executive leadership in government or a public or private corporation.
• Two (2) or more years of experience helping Army leaders translate military experience and attributes into civilian executive-level experience and attributes.
• Two (2) or more years of public speaking experience.
• Ability to travel within CONUS, including to the National Capital Region for in-person courses.

We are extra impressed by folks with:

• A current PHR/SPHR, SHRM-CP/SCP, or executive coaching credential (e.g., ICF ACC/PCC).
• Experience delivering executive transition or career curriculum in an online/virtual format.
• Prior experience instructing ASEP-T, TAP, or other senior-leader career transition programs.
• Experience designing or delivering spouse and family transition programming.
• Fluency with AI-enabled job search tools, LinkedIn, and executive personal branding.
