Job Description

With eight design studios worldwide, chances are you've encountered our work. We specialise in architecture, landscape architecture, interior design, and urban design. Our diverse, multi-disciplinary team brings together a wealth of skills and perspectives that unlock the economic, social, and cultural potential of projects.

Across our studios we connect insight and creativity, creating a better future by designing the world’s best places – places people love, is what drives us.

At Hassell, we're dedicated to sustainability and regenerative design. Our designers play a pivotal role in shaping a better future for communities and our planet. Join us in making a lasting impact.

We are seeking an Urban Design professional with 3-5 years professional experience and a strong interest in the built environment, particularly the relationship between buildings, public spaces, and urban systems.

This role will:

  • Contribute to the design and delivery of urban design and master planning projects across a range of scales and sector types, including Urban Design and Public Realm, Health and Urban Transport.
  • Read and interpret complex reports and strategic papers and pull out the parts that shape a master plan — from spatial requirements through to governance and delivery considerations.

  • Translate master plan intent into clear, compelling diagrams, frameworks and conceptual plans, particularly in early project stages.

  • Rapidly produce high-quality urban design graphics that explain ideas simply — diagrams that clients and project teams can quickly understand.

  • Work closely with architecture, landscape and planning teams to ensure urban design thinking supports the broader city context.

  • Take briefs and work autonomously — developing draft diagrams and concepts that can be reviewed, refined and built upon by the wider team

  • Support early-phase master planning with fast, iterative graphic output that helps move ideas forward.

Qualifications

Skills and Experience

The role requires proven skills in urban design, with an appreciation of the principles of architecture and/or landscape architecture, strong conceptual design thinking, visual communication skills, the ability to operate effectively and efficiently in a deadline-focused environment and principles of regenerative urban development.

  • A degree in Urban Design, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or a related field
  • 3–5 years of professional experience – Urban Design focussed experience preferred.
  • Advanced Adobe Illustrator skills — this role requires diagramming, working to scale, and producing precise urban design graphics (not just layout or presentation work).
  • Excellent graphic communication and technical skills (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Rhino, Grasshopper, QGIS).
  • Strong graphic communication skills, with the ability to produce diagrams quickly and efficiently.
  • Demonstrated experience in urban design projects including Urban Design and Public Realm, Health and Urban Transport.
  • Demonstrated high level communication skills including report writing and ability to undertake presentations.
  • Ability to collaborate in a team environment and contribute ideas with enthusiasm.
  • A self-starter and able to work independently and ask for feedback when needed.

Additional Information

Our team enjoys a wide range of benefits to support their development and well-being:

  • 16 weeks paid parental leave for both primary and secondary carers.
  • A progressive flexible work policy that allows hybrid work, location flexibility and work pattern flexibility
  • Inter-studio transfer opportunities
  • Wellbeing benefits
  • Development and training opportunities, including access to online training programs and our People Coach program.
  • Study assistance.

About Hassell

We are a leading international design practice with studios in Asia, Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Our purpose is to create a better future by designing the world’s best places – places people love.

Our design values are shared globally across all our studios, by the talented people who work in them: architects, interior designers, landscape architects, urban designers, planners and specialist consultants.

We work across a broad range of scales, from the interior design of a boutique retail store through to major public architecture and strategic urban planning for cities. And we work together in integrated design teams because they produce the best outcomes for our clients.

Our focus is on people and how we create better, more meaningful experiences for them. We do that through creative, holistic thinking, a deep knowledge base and a rigorous design process.

We judge the success of the buildings and places we design by the way people use and enjoy them - the clients who commission them, the people who inhabit them.

We are a Certified B Corp.
