The technician uses technical knowledge along with interpersonal skills to understand customer and product issues, and propose solutions and execute repairs. Tasks include field and in-house troubleshooting, diagnosis and repair of products. Follow departmental procedures and prepare all necessary reports and documentation. May provide customer support assistance.

Upon completion of all UPS product training, a UPS Field Service Technician should be able to perform the following assignments:

  • Perform Startup of new UPS equipment and peripherals at customer’s sites.
  • Follow the startup procedures for the startup of single and three phase UPS, multi-module (parallel) systems, ESS systems (either VRLA, SCiB and/or any other ESS technology), Maintenance bypass system.
  • Startup procedures include the use of measurement equipment to measure AC voltage (up to 600Vac), DC voltage (up to 600Vdc), AC current (up to 3000 amps), phase rotation (up to 600vac) among others.
  • Startup also includes the use of a laptop and/or other tools to connect and install operational firmware, perform software changes or setting adjustments.

A UPS technician may also encounter problems during startups that will require the use of hand tool and power tools to disassemble and reassemble a UPS module, battery cabinet (ESS) or any other piece of equipment with a problem.

  • Perform Commissioning and Site Support at customer’s sites.
  • Commissioning support is a common task of a UPS Field Service Technician.
  • Commissioning support consists of extended time at customer’s site to provide support to the Commissioning agents to assure the proper operation of the UPS equipment and all its peripheral equipment.
  • Common tasks include burn-ins (may vary from 2 to 12 hrs.), discharge and recharge tests, verify monitoring device operation, resolve any issue that may come up during commissioning tests.
  • Other tasks may include pre-power checks, modifications, and inspections of all Toshiba provided equipment.
  • These tasks may be time consuming requiring additional time at customer’s site.
  • Perform Preventive maintenance of existing UPS equipment at customer’s sites.
  • Follow the Preventive Maintenance (PM) procedures of single and three phase UPS, multimodule (parallel) systems, ESS systems (either VRLA, SCiB and/or any other ESS technology), Maintenance bypass system.
  • Preventive maintenance procedures include the use of measurement equipment to measure AC voltage (up to 600Vac), DC voltage (up to 600Vdc), AC current (up to 3000 amps), phase rotation (up to 600vac) among others.
  • Preventive maintenance also includes the use of a laptop and/or other tools to connect and install operational firmware, perform software changes or setting adjustments.
  • Preventive maintenance may also include the replacement of damaged and/ or worn-out parts.
  • Such parts may include cooling fan, capacitors, air filters, batteries, etc.
  • Troubleshooting/ repairs of UPS equipment at customer’s sites.
  • Troubleshoot UPS equipment and peripheral equipment using schematics to follow the circuitry and locate defective components.
  • Use of testing equipment such as DMM to check components and power supply voltages to determine cause of failures.
  • Using hand and power tools, replace defective components and perform operational testing after repairs are completed.
  • Verify UPS equipment is fully operational prior to leaving the customer’s site.

Factory Witness Test (FWT) Support.

  • The UPS Field Service Technician may be required to assist in the FWT at TIC facility when needed.
  • Tasks performed at the FWT normally include the installation of equipment for customer verification and compliance of customer’s requirements.
  • During installation of the equipment, the technician may be required to equipment using pallet jacks, forklift, or any other rigging equipment.
  • Use of hand and power tools to connect power cables, joint cabinets among many other tasks.

For all the tasks described above, the UPS Field Service Technician must be familiar with electrical safety and the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as he/she will be exposed to AC and DC power sources.


The UPS Field Service Technician may be required to:

  • Work extended shifts to accommodate the customers’ requirements.
  • Work during weekends, holidays or after hours.
  • Travel to customers’ site with little or no notice. This may include trips lasting several days and or weeks.
  • Must be able to perform repeated bending and lifting of up to 100lbs during certain procedures. Stand for extended periods of time.

Technical Support.
When not deployed to a customer’s site, the UPS Field Service Technician should be able to provide technical support either by phone or the On-Site Service Request (OSSR) system.
Technicians must be logged into the phone system during normal business hours to answer incoming calls requesting assistance with UPS equipment.
Process OSSRs as they come in by contacting the requester to gather additional information and setup service time if service is required. Assigned the OSSR to the proper Dispatch team member for scheduling. Accurate information of the issue and scope of work including parts requirements must be also provided.

Education/Certification:

  • Associates Degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering/Technology or similar with electronics or electrical theory. OR equivalent experience
