The Department at the University of Vienna is the largest academic center covering all fields relating to the German language and German-language literatures. The institute´s five core areas are Modern German Literature, Early German Literature, German Linguistics, German as a Foreign and Second Language, and German Language Pedagogy. These are completed by interdisciplinary fields such as Gender Studies, Cultural Studies, Media Theory, Literary Theory, and Children´s and Young Adult Literature. The institute supports over 5,000 students.

Your personal sphere of influence:

The Department of German Studies is engaged in teaching and research and provides training for students on various degree programmes. The academic staff are involved in numerous university committees and maintain various links with institutions both in Germany and abroad.

In the German as a Second Language working group, you can expect a small, dedicated team, a supportive work environment, and the opportunity to contribute and implement your own ideas.

The contract term for this position is 4 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment contract is automatically extended to 4 years unless the employer issues a notice of non-renewal within the first 12 months.

Your future tasks:

You actively participate in research, teaching & administration, which means:

• You are involved in research projects and scientific studies
• Contributions to scientific articles / Presentations
• We expect you to finalize your dissertation agreement within 12 months.
• You work on your dissertation and its completion.
• You hold courses independently within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement.
• Student support
• Assistance in organizing meetings, conferences and symposia
• You take on administrative tasks in research, teaching and administration.

This is part of your personality:

• Completed Master's degree or Diploma, in the field philology or education with a focus on German as a Second Language
• Basic experience in academic writing and with research methods (e.g.)
• Didactic competences
• Excellent proficiency in German as a first language
• Excellent command of written and spoken English (C1 Level)
• IT user skills
• You should be a team player with high social skills

Desirable qualifications:

• teaching experience / experience with e-learning
• Initial thoughts on a possible doctoral project
