The Unit Secretary acts as a receptionist in the department. Works under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse. Maintains the nursing station work area neat and free of clutter. Accurately performs clerical duties. Maintains appropriate levels of supplies. Transports medications as requested from the Pharmacy to the nursing unit. Transports specimens to the laboratory. Functions as a team member to promote effective communication. Embodies the Memorial Health System Performance Excellence Standards of Safety, Quality, Integrity and Stewardship that support our mission, vision and values.

Qualifications

Education:• High School diploma or equivalent required.

Licensure/Certification/Registry:• N/A

Experience:• Previous clerical and customer service experience preferred.Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:• Knowledge of medical terminology preferred• Demonstrates competence in written and oral communications. • Demonstrates skill in use of complex office equipment and telephone systems. • Has skill in use of information systems and Microsoft office applications. • Willing to accept responsibility and follow instructions. • Must be neat, clean, and have a pleasant voice and personality. • Demonstrates positive attitude. Strives to provide great patient experiences.

  • Greets patients, visitors, physicians and staff using great customer service tactics.
  • Answers telephone calls promptly using proper telephone etiquette and effectively manages use of telephone system.
  • Answers patient call requests promptly and channels requests to appropriate staff.
  • Keeps unit stocked with necessary supplies and keeps work area neat and organized.
  • Processes physician orders accurately and promptly.
  • Assembles patient medical record.
  • Gathers and copies appropriate paperwork for patient transfers.
  • Generates reports for staff and physicians as requested.
  • Performs job requirements accurately and with minimal direct supervision.
  • Communicates pertinent information to the Nurse Manager, charge nurse or staff nurse.
  • Assists nursing staff with requests.
  • Knowledgeable of the patient care information system to assist staff with requests.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
  • Accurately registers patient data in the information system.
  • Complies with established policies, procedures, standards and guidelines.
  • Consistently utilizes time and resources effectively and efficiently.
  • Maintains cleanliness of unit, service area, and equipment.
  • Performs other related work as required or requested.
