Under the supervision of the Nurse Director, performs a variety of clerical/clinical duties in support of the unit.

I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Performs clerical functions on the patient care unit and/or other patient care areas as assigned
2. Assembles patient records.
3. Files and documents patient information, i.e. Laboratory and X-ray reports.
4. Keeps records up-to date, in order and supplied with appropriate forms.
5. Transcribes physician orders accurately and timely.
6. Initiates orders via order entry system accurately and timely.
7. Facilitates effective communication and coordinates unit activities.
8. Answers telephone appropriately and courteously.
9. Takes and relays messages in a timely manner.
10. Places calls as requested to physicians, and other professional or ancillary services.
11. Greets and directs visitors, physician, and staff from other departments.
12. Opens, sorts and routes mail accurately and in a timely manner.
13. Orders, receives and stocks required inventory of stationary and forms (linen, sterile supplies; food and kitchen supplies as requested).
14. Assists the manager by performing administrative duties as requested.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. High School diploma/GED

Preferred:
1. Medical Assistant certification preferred
2. Classes in medical terminology preferred

Experience/Skills:
Required:
1. Computer skills required
2. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
3. Demonstrated prioritization and organizational skills
4. Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions
OR equivalent combination of the above

Preferred:
1. Experience in a hospital or health care setting preferred
2. Experience with Meditech computer system preferred

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.
