Department: Intensive Care Unit

Shift/schedule: Full Time (36 hrs/wk)

GENERAL SUMMARY

Works under the supervision of the Registered Nurse. The Unit Clerk/Monitor Tech/Nursing Assistant's primary job function is to perform clerical duties associated with preparing, compiling, and maintaining the patient records on a clinical nursing unit. May be required to work on other nursing units. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam Required
  • Completion of an approved nursing assistant program or equivalent experience required
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English required
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology required

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

The following is a summary of the major job duties of this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time.

  1. Maintains patient records.
  2. Functions as a communication source for the nursing unit.
  3. Records data, reports, enters patient charges and other information.
  4. Monitors cardiac rhythm by means of telemetry and/or hardwire.
  5. Interprets and identifies rhythms.
  6. Reports variances and life threatening arrythmias to appropriate RN.
  7. Welcomes and greets those coming on the unit.
  8. Uses telephone etiquette according to SOMC's standards for behavior.
  9. Performs basic patient care activities.
  10. Observes patients and reports unusual conditions and/or reactions to the nurse.
  11. Assists with admissions, discharges, and transfers of patients.
  12. Answers call lights and responds to patient needs.
  13. Maintains patient environment and performs routine cleaning tasks in nursing unit/patient rooms.
  14. Documents according to policy.
  15. Runs errands.
  16. Performs pre-cleaning, decontamination, and transports instruments that have been used on patients appropriately.
  17. Performs other duties as assigned.
