Work Location: This role is eligible for hybrid – this means you’ll have the flexibility of working from home and in the office, on a scheduled rotation once probation requirements have been met. Until then, the successful incumbent will be expected to work on-site, full-time.
Responsible for processing insurance policies; reviewing, evaluating and determining insurability for routine renewal insurance applications; and providing administrative support to the underwriting team.
Policy Processing
Processes new/renewal applications, revisions, cancellations and quotes with a mix of processing simple new business and servicing existing policies.
Calculates premiums, ensuring that appropriate rates are used and that applicable discounts and surcharges are applied.
Ensures that product and customer service levels are maintained.
Insurance Underwriting
Reviews and evaluates routine renewal applications and/or revisions to confirm the nature and degree of risk involved.
Acquires further information on applications (and the risks involved) when necessary.
Determines whether to accept, modify or escalate risks.
Places business within the rules and restrictions of subscription, reinsurance and legislative guidelines.
Broker Relationships
Explains underwriting criteria and decisions to brokers (verbally and/or in writing).
Develops and maintains working relationships with brokers to generate a flow of profitable business and provide assistance in resolving any service matters.
Promotes and sells supporting products to brokers.
Negotiates conditions, premiums and limitations for routine renewal policies to balance business needs and underwriting guidelines in limited situations (in applicable positions only).
Administrative Support
Reviews and dispatches underwriting submissions.
Maintains filing systems.
Provides administrative support to the underwriting team.
Leadership
Actively contributes to and supports a culture of a high performing workforce.
Participates in divisional succession plans, ensuring ongoing professional and career development and supports development in others.
Supports a culture of leadership and accountability to effectively deliver on strategic and corporate strategies.
Is actively committed to leadership development across the company, supporting team and workforce readiness through mentoring, training and developmental opportunities.
Corporate Management
Enables the success of programs and policies that are in alignment with corporate, strategic and divisional strategies.
Manages risk in area of authority.
Ensures that the Health, Safety and Emergency Management Policy is applied in area of responsibility.
A one-year certificate from an accredited post-secondary education institution in a relevant field of study such Business and specializing in insurance and risk management
CIP designation (or are working toward/interested in pursuing it)
1 – 2 years’ directly related experience
Knowledge of office procedures and office equipment.
Knowledge of computers and Microsoft Word and Excel.
Knowledge of underwriting procedures.
Knowledge of the principles and practice of insurance.
