This role evaluates risks unique to fire protection operations—such as system design, installation quality, code compliance, and ongoing maintenance exposures—while analyzing underwriting data to determine appropriate coverage terms and pricing. The Underwriter partners closely with brokers and stakeholders to deliver customized, compliant, and profitable insurance solutions.

What will your job entail?

  • Underwrite new and renewal fire protection contractor business by reviewing applications, policy forms, broker endorsement requests, and supporting documentation in accordance with underwriting guidelines.

  • Assess contractor operations for exposure related to faulty installation, system failure, property damage, and bodily injury.
  • Determine risk acceptability by analyzing factors such as scope of services (e.g., sprinkler installation, fire alarm systems, kitchen suppression systems), project types (residential, commercial, industrial), geographic exposure, and claims history.
  • Establish appropriate coverage limits, terms, conditions, and pricing based on risk characteristics and delegated underwriting authority.
  • Accept, modify, or decline risks based on technical underwriting analysis and company risk appetite.
  • Deliver high-quality underwriting service for both new and renewal business with strong technical expertise and adherence to underwriting standards.
  • Ensure compliance with state regulations, fire safety codes, and carrier guidelines specific to fire protection contractors.
  • Actively manage portfolio performance, including growth, retention, and profitability of assigned accounts.
  • Develop premium forecasts and support business planning to meet financial and production targets.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers, agents, and program partners specializing in contractor and fire protection risks.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to manage submissions, quotes, binds, and policy issuance accurately and efficiently.
  • Identify new business opportunities, maximize retention, and conduct proactive renewal reviews.
  • Participate in marketing initiatives, industry events, and fire protection trade associations to enhance market presence.
  • Stay current on industry trends, regulatory updates, emerging risks (e.g., system technology changes, evolving fire codes), and underwriting best practices.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Risk Management, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).
  • Minimum of 5+ years of Property & Casualty underwriting experience, preferably focused on contractors, construction risks, or fire protection services.
  • Strong understanding of exposures related to installation, inspection, and maintenance of fire suppression and sprinkler systems.
