Underground Utility Damage Investigator

The Regulatory and Compliance team at Colorado Springs Utilities is seeking an enthusiastic and positive professional to join us as an Underground Utility Damage Investigator. In this role, you will be responsible for responding to and conducting investigations into damage involving Colorado Springs Utilities’ underground infrastructure—determining the root cause of each incident and producing detailed, comprehensive written damage investigation reports to support the Damage Prevention Program. This work spans our four-service utility, which provides water, wastewater, electricity, and natural gas. You will also support the Colorado Springs Utilities Damage Prevention Near-Miss Program, helping strengthen safety and operational excellence.

Success in this position requires strong skills in locating underground utilities and interpreting maps and records. Because the role involves extensive in-person interaction with customers, contractors, and stakeholders, you will also rely on excellent communication abilities, confident conflict management skills, and a commitment to exceptional customer service.

Key areas of focus:

  • Conducts investigations into damaged Utilities’ underground infrastructure.
  • Creates a written damage investigation report to ensure compliance with applicable regulatory authorities, which includes root cause analysis using the 5 Whys methodology.
  • Re-creates underground utility locates during the investigation process.
  • Educates contractors on Colorado excavation laws and local ordinances.
  • Support the Damage Prevention Near-Miss program by following up on reported incidents.

Who You Are:
Highly qualified candidates will bring 3 years of experience operating utility locating equipment and be knowledgeable of gas, water, electric, and wastewater system principles. We are seeking candidates who demonstrate leadership qualities and initiative, work management, and customer service skills. You will also be required to drive a company vehicle to customer locations, so a Valid Driver’s license is required.

*This role at times will require working shift work to cover core business hours for Damage Prevention. There will be times you will work in challenging conditions, respond to emergencies, and be subject to working in all types of weather conditions. The selected candidate will be required to live in the Colorado Springs Utilities service territory or be able to move into the service territory within five (5) months of the hire date.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
  • Positions in this class typically require exposure in all weather conditions.
