The Underground Reliability Engineer is responsible for improving the reliability, availability, and performance of underground mining equipment and infrastructure through data-driven analysis, failure elimination, and continuous improvement initiatives. This role provides technical leadership to maintenance and operations teams by analyzing equipment performance, conducting root cause investigations, developing maintenance strategies, and implementing solutions that enhance safety, productivity, and asset life.
The successful candidate will work closely with maintenance, operations, planning, and supply chain teams to optimize equipment performance, reduce downtime, and support the achievement of operational and business objectives.
Reliability & Asset Performance
- Lead and facilitate root cause failure analyses (RCFA) for critical mobile and fixed asset failures.
- Identify recurring equipment issues and implement corrective and preventive actions to improve reliability and extend component life.
- Analyze maintenance and operational data, including MTBF, MTTR, availability, utilization, and OEE metrics.
- Develop, monitor, and continuously improve reliability strategies for underground mining fleets and supporting infrastructure.
- Support condition monitoring programs, including oil analysis, vibration analysis, thermography, and predictive maintenance initiatives.
- Review equipment performance trends and recommend improvement projects that deliver measurable operational benefits.
Maintenance Strategy & Continuous Improvement
- Collaborate with maintenance planners, supervisors, and operational leaders to optimize preventive maintenance programs.
- Support the development and management of asset maintenance strategies, criticality assessments, and equipment lifecycle plans.
- Maintain and improve asset management data, including Bills of Materials (BOMs), maintenance plans, and equipment hierarchies.
- Drive reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) and continuous improvement initiatives across underground operations.
- Monitor and report on reliability KPIs, ensuring performance targets are achieved and sustained.
Technical Leadership
- Provide technical support and engineering expertise to maintenance and operations personnel.
- Mentor supervisors, planners, technicians, and operators in effective problem-solving methodologies and reliability principles.
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement through coaching, training, and structured problem-solving techniques.
- Liaise with OEMs, contractors, and suppliers to resolve technical issues and optimize equipment performance.
Financial & Business Support
- Support maintenance budgeting, forecasting, and cost control activities.
- Perform cost-benefit analyses and evaluate capital and maintenance improvement opportunities.
- Develop business cases for reliability improvement projects and asset replacement strategies.
- Track and report the financial impact of reliability initiatives.
Health, Safety & Environmental Performance
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to safety leadership and compliance.
- Ensure reliability initiatives align with site safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
- Actively participate in safety investigations and risk assessments related to equipment performance and maintenance activities.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Improvement in equipment availability and reliability.
- Reduction in unplanned downtime and recurring failures.
- Increased Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF).
- Improved maintenance cost efficiency and asset life.

Qualifications
Essential
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or,
- 10 years technical maintenance experience maintaining UG hard rock mining equipment Sandvik / Cat / Epiroc.
- Minimum 3–5 years of engineering experience within mining, heavy industry, or a related field.
- Experience with equipment reliability analysis, maintenance systems, and failure investigations.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Preferred
- Experience in underground mining operations.
- Direct experience with underground mobile equipment such as drills, loaders, trucks, bolters, and auxiliary support equipment.
Technical Skills
- Knowledge of reliability engineering principles, asset management, and maintenance best practices.
- Proficiency with CMMS/EAM systems such as SAP, Oracle, JDE, Pronto, or similar platforms.
- Experience using business intelligence and data visualization tools such as Power BI.
- Strong understanding of root cause analysis methodologies, including 5-Why and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA).
- Working knowledge of predictive maintenance and condition monitoring technologies.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and data analysis tools.

Working Conditions
- Regular exposure to underground mining environments.
- Ability to work in mining and workshop conditions, including varying temperatures, dust, noise, and confined areas.
