About Island Gold District:Alamos Gold’s Island Gold District will become one of the largest and lowest-cost gold mines in Canada. Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, the Underground Maintenance – Shaft Superintendent is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation and maintenance of shaft systems, hoisting equipment, underground infrastructure, crushing facilities, and fixed surface/underground assets. This role provides leadership to maintenance teams, ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, and delivers effective maintenance planning, execution, and continuous improvement. The Superintendent plays a critical role in asset integrity, production reliability, and the long-term operational health of the mine.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership & Team Management

  • Provide daily leadership to maintenance supervisors, trades, and support staff across shaft maintenance, crushing, and fixed infrastructure teams.
  • Develop workforce capability through mentoring, training, and performance management.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture through visible leadership, field presence, and risk mitigation practices.
  • Ensure maintenance work is executed according to standards, procedures, and regulatory requirements.

Shaft & Hoisting Systems

Oversee maintenance and reliability of:

  • Hoists, headframes, sheave wheels, conveyances, ropes, and shaft steel
  • Shaft services including utilities, communication systems, and safety systems
  • Ensure compliance with all shaft and hoisting regulations, inspection schedules, and certification requirements.
  • Coordinate rope changes, major shutdowns, audits, and specialist contractor involvement.
  • Implement long-term plans for shaft integrity, lifecycle upgrades, and condition monitoring.

Underground Fixed Infrastructure

Manage maintenance for:

  • Pumping systems, dewatering stations, sumps
  • Ventilation systems, fans, regulators, heating infrastructure
  • Power distribution, substations, communications, and control systems
  • Underground shops, fuel bays, refuge stations, explosives storage
  • Prioritize work based on operational needs, safety, and equipment criticality.

Crushing Operations

  • Oversee crushing plant maintenance, reliability, and uptime performance.
  • Ensure crushers, conveyors, feeders, screens, and drives are maintained to OEM and regulatory standards.
  • Align with production leadership to coordinate planned downtime and respond to breakdowns safely and efficiently.
  • Support optimization initiatives to improve throughput, equipment life, and energy efficiency.

Maintenance Planning & Execution

  • Work closely with Planners/Schedulers to ensure high-quality work plans, spare parts readiness, and effective weekly scheduling.
  • Approve maintenance strategies, PM programs, and job scopes for critical assets.
  • Ensure maintenance backlog is managed effectively and that corrective actions are completed on time.
  • Lead major maintenance shutdowns and coordinate cross-functional teams.

Reliability & Continuous Improvement

  • Implement reliability programs (RCA, condition monitoring, defect elimination).
  • Analyze downtime, maintenance KPIs, and equipment performance trends to drive improvements.
  • Recommend technical solutions, upgrades, and long-term capital improvements for hoisting, crushing, and infrastructure systems.
  • Drive standardization and adherence to maintenance best practices.

Safety, Compliance & Documentation

  • Ensure all maintenance activities meet site standards, environmental regulations, and applicable mining/hoisting legislation.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspections, and technical documentation.
  • Participate in safety audits, incident investigations, and emergency response planning.
  • Enforce strict compliance with LOTO, confined space, working-at-heights, and shaft-specific safety practices.

Qualifications & Experience

Required

Trade certification, engineering diploma/degree, or equivalent technical background.

  • 7–10+ years of mining maintenance experience, including leadership roles.
  • Experience with hoisting systems, shafts, or underground fixed infrastructure.
  • Strong understanding of crushing plant maintenance and material handling systems.
  • Proficiency with SAP or similar CMMS for work management and planning workflows.
  • Demonstrated success in managing teams in a high-risk, fast-paced mining environment.

Preferred

Hoisting Engineer certification or prior experience working with regulated hoisting equipment.

  • Experience with underground project work, capital installations, or infrastructure expansions.
  • Strong knowledge of reliability engineering principles (e.g., RCM, RCA, vibration analysis).

Alamos Gold Inc. provides flights from Toronto, Sudbury, Thunder Bay and Rouyn-Noranda to Wawa. The schedule is 7on / 7off, or 4 on/ 3 off.
