Background:

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. By positioning women's rights at the center of all its efforts, UN Women leads and coordinates United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It provides strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States' priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

In Indonesia UN Women develop some programmes to implement its mandates; i.e. Ending Violence against Women, Women’s Peace and Security, and Integrating Gender Equality into National and local policies and plans. Through its programme implementation, UN Women facilitates capacity building for both government and civil society organizations, produce knowledge products on women’s human rights that can be used as evidence-based advocacy tools. Throughout the implementation, UN Women engages with local and international resource persons to share international knowledge on the related issues as well as to bring out the local knowledge to international forum.

For effective communication and making information and materials accessible in local language, UN Women Indonesia is seeking qualified translator/interpreter for providing timely and high-quality translation/interpretation services from English into Bahasa Indonesia and vice versa and simultaneous translation for UN Women events in 2026-2029.

The consultant will report to the Communication Team and the broader UN Women Indonesia team, depending on the specific team to which they are assigned. The consultant will be supported by the assigned team member, who will serve as the point of contact for contract and payment matters.

Description of Responsibilities /Scope of Work

Throughout the duration of the contract, the consultant is expected to perform the following indicative tasks:

Translation Services:

• Translation from English to Bahasa Indonesia and vice versa of various publications, reports, documents, presentations, studies, briefs, advocacy, and communications materials, among others. Revise translations as necessary, incorporating any corrections or changes requested by UN Women Indonesia, and resubmit the revised documents within the agreed timeframe.

Interpretation Services

• Provide simultaneous interpretation versa during

events, meetings, workshops, conferences, field missions, and other events organized by UN Women Indonesia.

• Interpret speeches, presentations, discussions, and other oral communication from Bahasa Indonesia to English and vice versa.
• Terminology and Quality Assurance:
• Conduct thorough terminological research using UN/UN Women term and other resources to ensure the accuracy and consistency of translations.
• Take full responsibility for the quality and accuracy of the entire translated document before submission.

Output and Payments

• Outputs of the consultants are translated documents and provision of simultaneous translations from English to Indonesia and vice versa for UN Women Indonesia events throughout the period/duration of the assignment.
• Under the retainer modality, the supervisor and the consultant will negotiate and agree in advance on the expected number of days necessary to carry out a specific assignment. Each assignment will be considered completed after the supervisor’s approval.
• All payments to the consultant will be made subject to the approval of deliverables.

Consultant’s Workplace and Official Travel

This is a home-based consultancy. As part of this assignment, the consultant might need to work on-site to provide interpretation for the event in Jakarta or if it is required outside duty station.

Required Qualifications

Education and Certification:

• Completion of secondary education required.
• At least bachelor’s degree in Indonesian studies, English literature, gender and women’s studies, or related field is an asset.

Experience:

• A minimum of 6 years’ (for secondary education) and 3 years (for bachelor) professional experience in providing translating services rom English to Bahasa Indonesia and vice versa of various communication materials and experience in providing simultaneous interpretation versa during events, meetings is required. .
• Familiarity with terminologies and concepts of gender equality and justice system in Indonesia will be an advantage.
• Experience in providing translation and interpreter services to UN and international is an advantage.

Languages:

• Fluency in English and Bahasa is required
