Job Description

The Apprentice Mechanic has the ability to troubleshoot major and minor mechanical problems, as well as the ability to repair and adjust all necessary mechanical components. Work assignments will be received in the form of oral or written work orders, but the employee is expected to determine the nature and extent of needed repairs.

Shop Manager

Essential Job Duties:

  • Maintains, repairs and overhauls heavy vehicles and industrial equipment
  • Interprets work orders and technical manuals
  • Keeps equipment clean, lubricated and maintained
  • Diagnoses faults or malfunctions
  • Adjust equipment and repairs or replaces defective parts, components or systems
  • Obey all workplace health and safety and code of conduct workplace rules
  • Undertake the training and assessment required under the training plan
  • Ability to perform physical requirements of the job
  • Repetitive lifting, pushing, pulling and climbing
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions
  • Needs excellent diagnostic and problem-solving skills
  • Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity
  • Waste industry experience, a plus
  • Completion of college or vocational or technical training, a plus
  • Experience with routine maintenance operations is required

Scope of Responsibility:

This role is an individual contributor responsible for performing mechanical maintenance and repairs on heavy vehicles and industrial equipment under general supervision. The Apprentice Mechanic independently troubleshoots routine issues, completes assigned work orders, and escalates more complex repairs as needed. Work directly impacts equipment safety, reliability, and daily operational readiness.

  • Ability to perform physical requirements of the job
  • Repetitive lifting, pushing, pulling and climbing
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions
  • Needs excellent diagnostic and problem-solving skills
  • Good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity
  • Waste industry experience, a plus
  • Completion of college or vocational or technical training, a plus
  • Experience with routine maintenance operations is required

  • Waste industry experience, a plus
  • Completion of college or vocational or technical training, a plus
  • Experience with routine maintenance operations is required
  • A valid CDL driver license is a plus
  • Must be 21 years of age, or older

Physical Demands & Work Environment:

  • Handling heavy tools and parts, sometimes lifting up to 70 pounds.
  • Prolonged periods of standing, bending, and working in awkward positions.
  • Fine motor skills for handling small parts and tools.
  • Typically work in garages or workshops, which may be noisy, have unpleasant odors, a limited ventilation.
  • Exposure to chemicals, oils, and other hazardous substances.
  • Often required to wear protective gear, such as gloves and safety glasses.
  • May be required to lift up to 75 pounds.
