Job Description

UI/ UX Designer

NHRC's mission is to optimize the operational health and readiness of the U.S. Armed Forces by conducting research and development to affect Department of Defense policy and practice. OASYS provides software engineering, modeling and simulation development, analysis, technical support, and training in support of NHRC to the military medical community at the Service, Combatant Command, Joint Staff, and DoD Headquarters Levels.

OASYS is seeking a User Interface (UI)/ User Experience (UX) Designer to join the team that will transition our planning tools from desktop applications to cloud-native web applications. The modernization effort will include the development of new user interfaces and merging workflows from multiple planning tools into single cloud-native application. The UI/UX Designer will play a pivotal role in the design of the next generation of medical planning tools for NHRC. This position is located in Huntsville, AL. Position may require minimal travel in support of customer requirements.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Design & Visual Communication
  • Design intuitive, user-friendly interfaces, ensuring alignment with user needs and business goals for a web browser-based application.
  • Create visually compelling dashboards and reports that enhance data storytelling and support decision-making.
  • Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
  • Work closely with subject matter experts, system engineers, software developers, and customer stakeholders to translate complex data and workflows into clear, engaging designs.
  • Facilitate design discussions and incorporate feedback to refine and improve user experiences.
  • Tools & Prototyping
  • Utilize design and prototyping tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, JustInMind, or like to create wireframes, mockups, and interactive prototypes.
  • Apply UI/UX best practices including layout, hierarchy, typography, color theory, and accessibility standards.
  • Technical Awareness
  • Communicate with the software development team to ensure designs are feasible within a web browser environment using the preferred software development technologies (Microsoft ASP.NET/Blazor).
  • User-Centered Design & Accessibility
  • Apply a user-centered design approach, with strong sensitivity to stakeholder goals and challenges.
  • Ensure designs meet accessibility standards and DoD design guidelines where applicable.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

  • Requires Bachelor's degree (Master's preferred) in Graphic Design, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Digital Media, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • 4+ years (or 2+ years with Master's) of experience in UI/UX design, with a focus on web browser-based applications.

Required Design Skills:

  • Strong grasp of UI/UX principles: layout, hierarchy, typography, color theory, and accessibility.
  • Experience designing applications that have been deployed in a variety of web browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, etc.)
  • Experience with design and prototyping tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, JustInMind, or similar.

Preferred Design Skills:

  • Certifications that demonstrate relevant expertise such as:
  • Certified UX Designer (e.g., Nielsen Norman Group, Human Factors International)
  • Adobe Certified Professional (Visual Design or UX Design)

Preferred Soft Skills:

  • User Advocacy Demonstrates a strong user-centered mindset, with the ability to understand and advocate for user needs throughout the design process.
  • Attention to Detail Maintains high standards for visual consistency, accessibility, and usability.
  • Clear Communication Clearly articulates design decisions and rationale to both technical and non-technical stakeholders in written and verbal form.
  • Collaborative Mindset Works effectively in cross-functional teams, incorporating feedback and aligning design with broader project goals.
  • Adaptability: Comfortable with changing requirements and resolving conflicting feedback from multiple stakeholders.
  • Time Management: Effectively prioritizes tasks and meets deadlines.

Citizenship Requirements:

Due to classified work at the facility and related access restrictions, successful applicants must be U.S. citizens and must be able to gain and maintain a DoD Secret level clearance.
