Under the general supervision of the Regional Clinical Nurse Coordinator, this position provides professional in-person nursing and health services to the UConn Stamford campus. Provides patient-focused advice and education. Conducts health promotion and educational outreach. Collaborates with other providers to enable the student to attain and maintain health. As a college health nurse, this position supports the maintenance and improvement of the health of students, identifying and assisting in removing or modifying health-related barriers and supporting early detection and early intervention strategies. Responsible for creating and delivering health education. Refers students to other resources as appropriate; maintains electronic medical records and ensures compliance with state laws and regulations, SHaW policies and procedures, and program protocols. May include nursing assessments, examinations and treatment. May include travel to other campus locations as needed. This position is in person.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Interview patients, document medical history, may examine patients, and make assessments and/or nursing diagnoses of the condition of such patients. Counsels patients regarding treatment and prevention.
• Provide in-person and telephone triage and consultation on treatment and prevention.
• Collaborate with patients and the Health Care Team to formulate a tailored plan ensuring they receive timely and comprehensive care that meets their needs. Act as a liaison between patients and healthcare providers, ensuring that patients’ needs and preferences are communicated effectively.
• Offer emotional support and assist patient /families in accessing community resources, financial aid, and support groups to alleviate the burden of medical treatment, helping them cope with the stress and anxiety associated with a variety of health conditions.
• May consult with physicians and APRN’s for evaluations and recommendations for unusual findings. May refer patient for specialized medical care beyond the scope of the Student Health Service, including arranging necessary ambulance transportation. May provide necessary emergency care as indicated by protocol.
• Refers, coordinates, and assists patients in securing appointments for medical care, which may include supporting students in securing transportation and insurance solutions.
• May administer medications, immunizations, treatments and certain tests via established protocols as authorized by licensed physicians and APRNs.
• Participates in and/or conducts in-service presentations. Participates in various SHaW and University committees and advisory groups.
• Participates in health education programming and delivery, including but not limited to tabling on health-related topics pertinent to college health; collaboration and coordination of outreach events with both UConn and community providers.
• Maintains accurate and timely clinical records and reports.
• May maintain drugs, medical supplies, and equipment as necessary.
• Mentors other nonprofessionals during work assignments.
• Performs related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of CT in good standing.
2. Bachelor’s degree in nursing or other health-related field.
3. Three (3) years of experience, within the last 5 years, providing comprehensive nursing care to adolescent/young adults in an ambulatory care, school health or urgent care setting, conducting physical assessments, monitoring vital signs, administering treatments and medications, educating patients about disease management and self-care, and collaborating with providers as well as other healthcare professionals to implement care plans.
4. Nursing experience applicable to the assigned work area.
5. Utilization of an electronic health record.
6. Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills necessary for effective work relationships.
7. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate information.
8. Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgement and decision-making.
9. CPR Certification.
10. Must have a demonstrated understanding of and stated commitment to diversity, inclusion and equity issues.
11. Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Five or more years of Nursing experience.
2. Experience working in a College Health Setting.
3. Experience providing Nursing Telephone Triage/Advice.
4. ACLS.
5. Experience in a Case Management /Nurse Navigator role.
6. Bilingual experience (Spanish preferred).

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a permanent, in-person, 9-month, 35-hour a week position, working from mid-August through mid-May annually with paid summer leave. This opening is for a primarily day position with a flex schedule, which may include an occasional weekend day. Candidate must be willing to extend into the evening hours on occasion to meet the needs of the service/population. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. A requirement to be present on the Storrs campus for a period of orientation may be needed.
