Type Well Transcriptionist III

Provide real-time captioning and vicarious speech for students, faculty, staff, and guests of the university. This role ensures accessibility and equal access to communication as federally mandated.

Note: This is a part-time position 17.5 hours per week.

What you’ll do in this position:

  • Attend classes, meetings, and other events as assigned
  • Transcribe communication in real time for those events
  • Transcribe prerecorded materials (e.g., instructor videos)
  • Provide speech-to-text and text-to-speech communication for mutual understanding and full access
  • Arrange seating, standing, or other positioning to ensure unobstructed visual communication
  • Ensure lighting and auditory reception are appropriate for effective communication
  • Mediate understanding across cultures and clarify communication discrepancies related to cultural variation

What qualifies you for this role:

Required

  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Typing speed of at least 65 words per minute
  • Native or native-like English fluency and grammar skills
  • Ability to hear, comprehend, and retain auditory stimulus in working memory

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in any field of study
  • Typing speed of at least 70 words per minute
  • Official training with Type Well proprietary software

Additional Expectations:

This position requires the employee to keep and care for university-provided equipment and computer software. Employees must maintain working knowledge of this equipment and software and take reasonable care to ensure its protection and safety. Failure to do so, or failure to report problems in a timely manner, may result in termination of employment.

Pay Grade: 51

Typical Starting Pay: $28.25 - $36.25

The actual compensation offered will take into consideration internal equity and may vary based on the candidate’s job-related experience, knowledge, skills, and other relevant factors. Candidates with very significant work-related experience may receive an offer higher than the posted typical range.
