Job Description

The Turbine Resident Engineer will assume overall technical responsibility to support the customer in identifying plant risks and problems, recommending suitable solutions to improve plant performance and availability. The incumbent will respond to customer requests for technical issue resolution relating to steam turbines using technical product knowledge and analytical skills while adhering to sound engineering principles, standards, practices, procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform plant walk downs, including a comprehensive visual inspection of the plant, checking the correct operation of all accessible parts of the turbine and auxiliary systems.
  • A monthly report will be submitted by the Resident Service Engineer to the client.
  • Attend a 3 monthly technical discussion meeting between similar designed Eskom Power Stations.
  • Provide detailed reports to relevant client representatives when requested to do so.
  • Be available for emergency consultation during unplanned turbine failure incidents.
  • Inform the client of the latest engineering designs and developments that may improve the plant design to the benefit of the client.
  • Regularly informs the client about the fleet experience on similar turbine islands supplied by the Engineer. This shall be in the form of a documented report submitted on an agreed periodicity, but at least every six months.
  • Assist with compiling technical specifications for the refurbishment of turbine components.
  • Provide turbine related training as per the needs of the client’s turbine system engineers and the transfer of technology and know-how to enable the client’s system engineers to support the operating and maintenance functions.
  • Communication channel to the OEM on technical matters and information required for the operation and maintenance of the turbines. Provision of information and documentation as and when required.
  • Revising, monitoring and updating of relevant GE Vernova documentation, to ensure correct application of operating and maintenance procedures.
  • Compiling of technical specifications for plant operation and maintenance, including the recommended purchase of replacement parts.
  • Identification and optimization of spares to be held to support planned overhauls and other maintenance.
  • Determination of the maintenance requirement and the scope of work, prior to general overhauls, and specialist services required from the Engineer.
  • Recommend scope of work for all major planned outages.
  • Investigate and report on turbine occurrences.
  • Reporting of deviations from recommended procedures and good practices applicable to operation and maintenance.
  • Advice, specification and provision of procedures to enable the client to re-commission turbine plant and auxiliaries, particularly following major outage work, including attendance during return to service of turbine plant to provide “on the spot” advice if so required.
  • Offer advice when informed of an excursion on plant performance.
  • Record monthly all significant abnormal events, occurrences that occurred on the turbine.
  • Advise on the required turbine history recording, such as running hours and start/stops, etc.

Required Qualifications

  • B Tech., B Eng. or BSc.Eng. degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Minimum 5 years of post qualification experience in the Engineering, Operation, Maintenance and troubleshooting of Steam Turbines and associated equipment and systems.

Desired Characteristics

  • Knowledge of the GEC (Duvha, Tutuka & Majuba Power Stations) Steam Turbine Technology will be advantageous.
  • Good team player,researchand organizational skills, keen to learn, proactive attitude.
  • Excellent communication skills,enthusiasmand commitment.
  • Must be willing to work off hours and weekends to support emergency issue resolution.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve problems.
  • A good working knowledge of Control and Instrumentation applicable to Steam Turbine Plant.
