TUFLOW Coastal Modelling Specialist – Software Development

Department: Technical Capability

Employment Type: Full Time

Location: AUS - Brisbane

Reporting To: Jaap Van der Velde

Description

This is a rare opportunity to join BMT's established TUFLOW Software Team and contribute to the ongoing development, application and support of TUFLOW FV, our 2D and 3D hydrodynamic and environmental modelling software. The role combines coastal engineering, numerical modelling and software development, offering scope to apply existing expertise while further developing specialist capability within a collaborative software focused team.

With over 30 years of continuous development, TUFLOW is internationally recognised as global industry leader for accurate and workflow efficient flood, urban drainage, lake, estuarine and coastal hydrodynamic/environmental modelling software (https://www.tuflow.com/).

As a TUFLOW Coastal Modelling Specialist, you will contribute to the development, testing and enhancement of TUFLOW FV, applying your coastal engineering and numerical modelling expertise to deliver innovative software solutions. Working closely with developers, engineers and support specialists, you will help improve software performance, functionality and usability, translate user and industry needs into product enhancements, and contribute to the future direction of the TUFLOW Software Suite. You will also support technical resources and user engagement activities, with opportunities to publish technical papers, attend conferences, and deliver training and workshops both in Australia and internationally.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake complex technical and software development tasks, exercising professional judgement, initiative and appropriate autonomy.
  • Plan and prioritise work to deliver agreed outcomes within scope, schedule, budget and quality requirements.
  • Investigate technical and numerical modelling challenges, evaluate alternative approaches and develop practical solutions where established precedents may not exist.
  • Develop, test, verify, document and maintain software features across the TUFLOW Software Suite, with a primary focus on TUFLOW FV. This may include interpreting numerical methods, developing algorithms, writing and reviewing code, conducting software testing and preparing technical documentation.
  • Contribute to the planned enhancement and modernisation of the TUFLOW codebase to support product quality, maintainability, performance and the future needs of users.
  • Apply specialist coastal engineering and numerical modelling knowledge to software development, testing, technical support and product planning activities.
  • Collaborate with the wider TUFLOW team and other BMT specialists to deliver multidisciplinary development, research and technical initiatives.
  • Engage with users and stakeholders, as appropriate, to understand technical requirements, support service delivery and inform software development priorities.
  • Maintain a strong working knowledge of relevant modelling software, programming languages, development tools, numerical methods and industry practices.
  • Support the preparation of technical papers, guidance materials, training content and industry or conference presentations.
  • Work in accordance with applicable quality, safety, environmental, information security and software development procedures and standards.
  • Maintain and develop professional and technical capabilities relevant to the role.

In addition to these responsibilities, the position holder may be required to undertake other duties that may reasonably be required to achieve the purpose of the role.
