Knife River has an excellent opportunity for a Trucking Dispatcher to safely and efficiently assign appropriate equipment and personnel for completion of duties or deliveries, to assure on time and efficient use of resources by dispatching trucks and personnel in a timely manner, to ensure the targeted service level and cost, to assure DOT compliance.

DUTIES AND/OR RESPONSIBILITIES (summary of components that make up the job) An asterisk (*) indicates essential job functions that cannot be modified in order to fulfill the job requirements.

  1. Assigns appropriate equipment and personnel for completion of duties and deliveries.
  2. Quotes prices and receives orders for company products within guidelines.
  3. Directs activities of drivers and confers with customers, plant production and trucking supervisors.
  4. Enters job information into dispatch system to track, manage, allocate time and compensate 3rd party haulers.
  5. Receives cash payments and assure the process is seen through to the appropriate person(s).
  6. Keeps supervisor and drivers informed of tasks and situations so the schedule can be updated.
  7. Track and report time off/attendance of drivers.
  8. Answers phone to take/alter customer's order and complete all required information. Ensure the customer understands all relevant company policies such as “will calls”, additional products over amount ordered, towing charges, and our driver's responsibilities.
  9. Obtains all pertinent information from customer including but not limited to: Job numbers, cost codes, material type, quantity, job name; delivery address and instructions to the jobsite; required numbers such as PO, lot/block, customer job number; desired job start time; delivery rate, spacing, travel time to and from the jobsite; any restrictions in load size; special truck types required or not desired whether the order is a "go" or "will call". If “will call”, agree on a time of day to release and agree what will happen if the call is not received.
  10. Confirm the order and special instructions and give adequate notice to ensure proper materials are available.
  11. Determine the number of trucks per job and for the day to meet demands in the most efficient and effective way possible .
  12. Ask the customer for information regarding upcoming orders so there are no short-notice surprises.
  13. Communicate effectively (verbal, listening, written) maintain professionalism and work with difficult people under high stress situations. Self-motivated, team-player with good interpersonal skills; ability to maintain positive customer relations and act courteous/respectful of others.
  14. Troubleshoot and problem solve situations/problems (material quality, equipment operation/repair, etc.).
  15. Monitor and discuss production problems with co-workers and managers/supervisors.
  16. Ensure DOT compliance, obtain permits for heavy hauls and wide loads.
  17. Must be able to work weekends on a rotating schedule when on call.
  18. Answer and respond to phone calls, texts, and emails after normal office hours and on weekends as needed.
  19. Coordinate 3rd party haulers and build a good working relationship.
  20. Assure 3rd party haulers meet KRC insurance requirements when scheduling.
  21. Performs other duties as assigned.
  22. Timely and regular attendance is an essential requirement.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS (minimum educational, experience, or other relevant job requirements)

  1. High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required
  2. Minimum one (1) year of experience in a business environment (customer service, call handling, or order taking preferred)
  3. Ability to pass pre-employment drug screen, physical, and background/MVR checks
  4. Willingness to work flexible hours, including overtime, days, and nights
  5. Ability to work outdoors in all weather and seasonal conditions
  6. Strong communication (oral and written), organizational, and problem-solving skills
  7. Self-motivated with the ability to take initiative
  8. Demonstrated commitment to safety and following established procedures
  9. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
