Salary Range: $6,200 - $7,185 Monthly

This position is represented by the Teamsters 117 bargaining unit and requires in facility work daily.

The Washington State Department of Corrections is seeking a dedicated team player with excellent commercial driving and customer service skills to join the Correctional Industries (CI) Headquarters team as a Truck Driver 3! The goal of the Truck Driver 3 is to aid in the supervision and training of incarcerated individual workers in the duties assigned to them while working in a warehouse area and in the community completing transportation duties safely while following all regulations required by Federal and State Laws.

Correctional Industries (CI) is committed to maintain and expand incarcerated individual work training programs which develop marketable skills, instill, and promote positive work ethics and reduce the tax burden of corrections. This position supports that objective through leadership and mentorship of incarcerated Individual workers. You will train, instruct and evaluate the material handling equipment use while in day-to-day warehouse operations. The candidate of choice will also be responsible for correcting behaviors and actions, and for documentation, using appropriate reports and forms.

As a Truck Driver 3, some of your duties will include:

  • Operating a Variety of Weighted Vehicles up to 60,000 Gross Combined Weight or more, including semi-tractor/trailer to pick up and deliver goods from customer to vendors which could look like:
  • Operating vehicles using both feet and hands for repetitive movements in operation foot and hand controls
  • Conducting pre-trip inspections of both tractor and trailer or other vehicle being operated per the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and ensuring you have all required equipment needed for safe operation during current weather conditions
  • Checking the load to ensure it is secure and not subject to damage during transport
  • Operating a vehicle in a manner that adheres to all state and federal motor vehicle laws including narrow streets and alleys, under overpasses ensuring proper trailer height all in a variety of weather conditions
  • Conducting post trip inspection of both tractor and trailer or other vehicle being operated per the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)
  • Fueling the vehicle and reefer unit if it is less than one half tank of fuel and checking fluid levels and filling
  • Cleaning out vehicle cab and remove any trash
  • Ensuring all required paperwork is complete including e-logs, digital pre-trip and post-trip inspection logs, search reports associated with onsite and in route searches if applicable, and any accident or incident reports if needed. Maintain safety of vehicle and report needed maintenance.
  • Picking up and delivering goods to customers
  • Providing Customer Service when interacting with Customers
  • Supervising Incarcerated Individuals that are assisting with the day-to-day operations
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

What we need (required qualifications):

  • High school graduation or GED.
  • Minimum two years of full-time experience operating any combination of vehicles with a Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCVR) of up to 60,000 pounds or more
  • Must currently possess a valid driver's license with an unrestricted class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) endorsement as required by Federal and State law
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds
  • Must acquire P1 Bus endorsement for CDL within 4 months

Telework Details

This position may be allocated for telework. Work may be performed from your home or another offsite location within the state of Washington using a reliable internet or cellular hotspot service at that time. Employees are expected to perform assigned duties in a safe manner, to take proper care all state-issued equipment, and maintain confidentiality of all information in possession while working offsite. Employees will be required to commute to a Department of Corrections facility or field office as business requires, to potentially include components of the onboarding process. Some offices will have a “drop in” area available, however, a dedicated workspace within a DOC facility will not be provided.
