Responsibilities & Qualifications

The Surface science team, located in Kennesaw, Georgia has an opportunity to participate in our summer 2027 Co-Op program. The team is seeking a Tribochemistry Co-Op that can join the team for approximately 5 months starting in May 2027. This role is responsible for developing laboratory methods to simulate plant emulsion conditions and evaluate how changes in emulsion chemistry and properties influence tribological performance and metal surface characteristics.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and maintain emulsion formulations under controlled laboratory conditions.
  • Design and execute experiments (DoE) to simulate emulsion aging under operating conditions.
  • Conduct tribological testing and emulsion characterization.
  • Perform characterization of aluminum surface resulted from emulsion study using analytical techniques to assess changes in surface morphology and chemistry.
  • Analyze experimental results and summarize findings in technical reports and presentations.

Minimum qualifications

  • Undergraduate (Junior or Senior preferred) or graduate students pursuing degrees in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or related disciplines.
  • Enrolled in an accredited 4-year undergraduate or 2-year masters program.
  • Strong academic foundation in chemistry, materials science, or mechanics.
  • Hands-on laboratory experience, including sample preparation and experimental testing
  • Ability to work independently in a research environment.
  • Must be currently authorized to work in the United States for any employer

Preferred qualifications

  • Interest in surface science, tribology, lubrication, or aluminum processing.
  • Experience with surface characterization techniques.
  • Experience organizing, analyzing, and interpreting experimental data.
  • Strong problem-solving and organizational skills.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including technical reporting and presentations
