Summary

This position is responsible for supervising a crew in the maintenance of trees on city property.

  • Supervises, trains, and evaluates employees.
  • Inspects and maintains vehicle and equipment.
  • Trains personnel in the operation of a bucket truck, chipper, and a chipper truck.
  • Prunes and removes trees; operates a chipper.
  • Trains and supervises personnel in the use of safety procedures and the procedures for trimming and removing trees.
  • Flags traffic; brings vehicles and pedestrians through the work site safely.
  • Responds to citizen questions.
  • Prepares work orders and daily worksheets; reviews work orders daily to ensure completion.
  • Evaluates incident and accident reports.
  • Responds to emergency situations as needed and may be subject to on call hours.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Skill in the operation of light and heavy equipment including chippers, saws, blowers, bucket trucks, flatbeds, and dump trucks.

Qualifications

Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of specialized training in the occupational field, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions and to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years experience or service. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid commercial driver's license (CDL) issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

Supplemental information

The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

  • Pulling - use upper extremities to exert force, haul or tug.

  • Visual Acuity 1 - prepare, analyze data, transcribing, computer terminal, extensive reading.

The work is typically performed outdoors where the employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves. Subject to be on call 24/7 during emergency situations.
