The Resource Center has been providing services to persons with disabilities in the Chautauqua County area since 1958. From our humble beginnings as a gathering of parents and concerned citizens who wanted to provide educational and training opportunities for persons with developmental and intellectual disabilities, The Resource Center has grown into a comprehensive agency providing services to thousands of persons with all types and levels of disabilities.
The Resource Center is the largest non-governmental employer in Chautauqua County with more than 1,300 employees on its payroll.

DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL/CAREERIST
RESPONSIBLE TO: Residence Manager/Day Program Supervisor
FUNCTION:
To provide direct care and supervision in all activities of daily living, implement person’s Habilitation Plan, complete required documentation regarding milestones and behavior support programs, participate as an active member of a team with other program/department staff to provide the identified supports to individuals, and enhance the skills and/or create the opportunity for person supporting to achieve maximum independence, inclusion, individualization, and productivity.
The Direct Support Professional Careerist is required to obtain and maintain NYS medication administration certification, is required to administer medications as needed or assigned, and is required to provide assistance with lifting and transferring of assigned individuals. In addition, the Direct Support Professional Careerist must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of all SCIP- R protocols and procedures, utilizing positive behavioral support and lesser restrictive means of addressing maladaptive behavior before advancing to restrictive SCIP-R maneuvers. The Direct Support Professional Careerist must possess the unrestricted ability to routinely implement and perform all approved SCIP-R techniques, as needed or assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Physical condition commensurate with demands of the job, including the unrestricted ability to assist in lifting and transferring on a regular basis. Reliability, adaptability and flexibility in working in a variety of settings across day and individual; Maintains a good attendance record. Ability to follow written program plans and document and maintain records related to them. Ability to use educational training techniques for developmentally disabled adults. Knowledge of, or ability to obtain, computer skills sufficient to utilize direct support certification programs or other software necessary to complete assigned job duties. The ability to work with others as part of a team in order to satisfy the needs of individuals we support, the program and the Agency. Must demonstrate knowledge of, and willingness to adhere to, all departmental and agency policies and procedures.
The employee must also demonstrate the following competencies: ability to locate all of the information that is asked for and demonstrate knowledge of basic information associated with assigned individuals; successful completion of all required in-service training within required time frames; certification in NYS Medication Administration protocols and procedures, which includes protocols and procedures related to decertification and recertification process, First Aid, CPR and SCIP-R; demonstrated knowledge of the abuse, mistreatment and neglect policy, the incident reporting process, IPOPs and implementation of milestones.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High school or equivalency diploma strongly preferred. A valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record, as established by the agency insurance carrier, preferred. Has had a successful probationary SPR at the agency and has completed the NYS Medication Administration Certification.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:
1. Responsible for learning each habilitation plan, including milestones, behavior support programs, staff actions, and safeguards and provides needed support/supervision for person(s) supporting.
2. Implements person’s Habilitation Plans in order to create the opportunity for each person to achieve maximum independence, inclusion, individualization and productivity.
3. Encourages, guides, teaches and provides assistance to people supporting in acquiring and carrying out skills in personal care/daily living, including but not limited to feeding, showering, toileting, toothbrushing, etc.
4. Unrestricted ability to assist in lifting and transferring, utilizing approved techniques, as needed or assigned.
5. Monitors, reports and assists in maintaining health of all assigned, including ensuring adequate diet, according to identified person’s needs and/or requirements.
6. May be called upon and readily accepts shift leader assignment, which includes but is not limited to the following duties:
a. Provides leadership to staff in the assignment of tasks to ensure that the shift runs smoothly
b. Ensures the completion of all documentation required during the shift
c. Ensures all policies and procedures are adhered to during the course of the shift
d. Reports any and all concerns that may arise during the shift to the Residence Manager/Day Program Supervisor
7. Provides regular opportunities for people supporting to become part of their community by providing the support and supervision needed to participate in community events, including leisure/recreational and religious activities, that are based on personal choice and interest.
8. Provides a positive role model for people supporting while at the site and out in the community.
9. Completes required daily documentation including milestones, activity schedules and/or service sheets, behavior support programs, and other related paperwork.
10. Intervenes when individuals display maladaptive behavior according to Strategies for Crisis Intervention and Prevention (SCIP-R) protocols and/or behavior support program.
11. Intervenes and reports any incidents, unusual occurrences or illnesses per policy/procedure. Ensures any immediate protective action is taken.
12. Maintains NYS medication administration certification and may be called upon to administer medications as prescribed, as needed or assigned.
13. Advocates for the person by communicating any ideas, suggestions, and concerns to the appropriate person in a timely manner, including medical and dietary concerns and participates as an active member of the program planning team.
14. Maintains effective and positive relations with family, correspondents, friends, service providers and the community-at-large.
15. Assists in providing a safe, clean, comfortable and therapeutic environment to teach individuals new skills.
16. Maintains compliance with state and federal regulations as well as with agency and program policies and procedures.
17. Reports to the supervisor(s) any information pertinent to the needs of the assigned person and/or the needs of the operation of the site.
18. Performs any other related duties as required by supervisor(s).
